June Outfielder Rankings
Monday, June 06, 2011
Tweet
Welcome to the June rankings. Players are ranked based on how much value I believe they'll provide in 5x5 leagues over the rest of the season.
Outfielders
Falling off:
Falling off:
Milton Bradley
(No. 83),
John Mayberry
Jr. (No. 95),
Michael Saunders
(No. 99),
Lorenzo Cain
(No. 110),
Mark DeRosa
(No. 114),
Jarrod Dyson
(No. 115),
Matt Diaz
(No. 117),
Marcus Thames
(No. 118),
Scott Hairston
(No. 120)
Delmon Young
has gone from No. 21 to No. 56 in two short months. Well, they've probably been long months for him. As bad as he's been defensively, he's been about as big of a liability as anyone in baseball while hitting .221/.255/.264 to date. The Twins really have no choice but to keep playing him, particularly now with Kubel and
Jim Thome
on the disabled list. He still figures to pick his average up as the year goes along. I'm not so confident that enough power will come back to make him an asset in mixed leagues.
Brown hasn't won anything yet, but I've pushed him above Francisco in the hopes that he'll take over as the Phillies' right fielder. Brown is off to a nice little start since being called up, and while Francisco drove in a bunch of runs early, he's batting .159 since the beginning of May. Francisco is best utilized as a fourth outfielder anyway.
The Tigers are expected to activate Ordonez from the disabled list on Monday. What's not clear is who will go to make room for him. It may well be Dirks, even though Dirks has flashed some power since coming up and looks like he could be a real contributor. The Tigers still love
Don Kelly
and won't drop him. Perhaps they could choose
Omir Santos
or Wells instead, but Dirks' ranking is very tentative.
The Rockies are considering a demotion for Fowler, who is down to .238/.340/.348 for the season. I'm not particularly impressed with Jim Tracy's handling of him; even with his average down and his awful basestealing numbers (he's 2-for-8 this season), Fowler still scored 32 runs in 50 games batting first or second. Now he's either batting eighth or not playing at all. If the Rockies do drop him, they'd probably call up
Charles Blackmon
. He's hitting .342/.398/.578 for Triple-A Colorado Springs. However, he's not a center fielder. Either the Rockies would have to move Gonzalez back to center or play
Eric Young
Jr. there.
