July Catcher Rankings

Up this week are the July rankings. Players are ranked based on how I believe they will perform in 5x5 leagues over the remainder of the season. Along with the position rankings, you'll find a fully updated top 250 list.

Catcher Rankings

Falling off: Chris Snyder (No. 24), Jesus Montero (No. 36), Jake Fox (No. 38)

  • The catching pool is looking awfully shallow, particularly in NL-only leagues. The Dodgers, Astros, Pirates and Giants are all getting nothing from the catcher spot at the moment. Those in NL-only leagues needing help might want to target Soto. He's warming up, and his price tag should be a lot more reasonable than those attached to McCann and Montero.

  • I can't deny Avila any longer. He just hit .346 with two homers and 17 RBI in June, and he's right there with teammate Victor Martinez as the AL's top catcher to date. I projected him at 11 homers and 43 RBI for the season. He's currently at 10 homers and 46 RBI midway through.

  • Olivo turned in an absurd month of June, hitting .189/.196/.489 in 90 at-bats. Eight of his 17 hits were homers, he drove in 19 runs and he had a 26/1 K/BB ratio. Based entirely on that power surge, he's now a top-10 overall catcher for the year. Still, I'm not going to reward his streakiness.

  • I'd probably drop Rodriguez out of the top 40 entirely if it was certain he'd remain with the Nationals for the rest of the season. Still, since he might get a starting gig with the Giants or another team, he holds pretty steady in the rankings.
