July Second Baseman Rankings

Up this week are the July rankings. Players are ranked based on how I believe they will perform in 5x5 leagues over the remainder of the season. Along with the position rankings, you'll find a fully updated top 250 list.

Second Baseman Rankings

Falling off: Eric Young Jr. (No. 29), Jonathan Herrera (No. 39), Adam Rosales (No. 44)

  • The Ellis trade shook up the rankings a bit. I was probably going to place Jemile Weeks 18th anyway, but now I feel more comfortable about it. Ellis, who would have been listed in the high-30s, moves up to a season-high 24th. At least a modest turnaround should be expected, and it looks like the Rockies are going to hit him second, giving him plenty of at-bats and chances to score runs if he can get on base.

  • As a result of Ellis' arrival, both Young and Herrera fell from the rankings. Nelson, who was going to be ranked in the 27-30 range, is now No. 43. I wouldn't be surprised if the Rockies send him down to allow him to play every day.

  • There's a good argument to be made that Keppinger should be ranked a few spots higher, but I expect the Astros to trade him and he may well become a utilityman elsewhere. Once the Astros do move Keppinger, Downs is likely looking at an enhanced role.

  • With a .329 average and seven homers in 18 games since his demotion to Triple-A, Aviles is making a case to rejoin the Royals. Still, it probably won't happen until the team trades Wilson Betemit. I think that move will come by the conclusion of the All-Star break.
