June First Baseman Rankings

Welcome to the June first baseman rankings. Players are ranked based on how I believe they will perform in 5x5 leagues over the remainder of the season. Along with the position rankings, you'll soon find a fully updated top 250 list.

First Baseman Rankings

Dropping off: Derrek Lee (25th), Daric Barton (28th), Chris Parmelee (32nd)

  • With Miguel Cabrera off to third base, I'm going with Votto and then Pujols at the top. Cabrera would have been No. 1 had I left him here. Votto and Pujols have been the league's most productive first basemen over the last month, though Pujols comes in closer to Paul Goldschmidt and Paul Konerko and the rest of the pack than he does to Votto. Pujols may well outproduce Votto the rest of the way, but Votto seems like the safer choice at this point. He just doesn't slump.

 

  • Adrian Gonzalez is racking up the doubles, but he has just five homers and he's striking out three times for every walk (compared to the 114/93 K/BB ratio he had in 2010 and last year's 119/74 mark). The thinking was that Gonzalez would hit for more power this season now that he was a full year removed from shoulder surgery. He just hasn't looked like himself at any point, though. I still think he's going to bounce back, but it'd be nice to see him start pulling some balls against right-handed pitchers again.

 

  • It's pretty stunning that Ike Davis remains in the majors, especially with Jason Bay back and the Mets outfield suddenly looking crowded. I was a pretty big believer in Davis entering the year, but he's now closing in on 200 at-bats and still hitting .158. It seems likely that the spring case of Valley Fever has taken a toll, even though he seemed to overcome it quickly back in March. There's nothing in his numbers to suggest he's about to turn it around, and the Mets would seem to be a better off upgrading the outfield defense by putting Lucas Duda at first base.
