Second Baseman Rankings
Dropping off: Freddy Sanchez (29th), Johnny Giavotella (30th)
- Jason Kipnis has a .279/.337/.446 line that matches up pretty well with my .265/.337/.440 projection, but he's been a far more valuable fantasy second baseman than I expected. I projected him to steal 13 bases; he has 15 already. I dropped his run and RBI projections late in the spring because the plan was to hit him eighth initially; he ended up spending all of six games there and has mostly hit second ever since. I imagine Kipnis will slow down a bit, especially as a basestealer, but he should continue to rank among the top second basemen in the power categories.
- I would have liked to have moved Chase Utley up, but we just don't know what kind of Utley we'll be getting once he rejoins the Phillies, presumably at the end of the month. My guess is that he won't flash All-Star form anytime soon.
- Rickie Weeks' huge strikeout rate makes one wonder if he will be able to get his average up. Of course, he's not going to bat .164 all year, but there's also no sign that he's about to return to being the .270 hitter he was each of the previous three years. Maybe last month's hand injury is a factor, but he was slumping for five weeks before he got hit by a Lendy Castillo fastball. I'm dropping him a few slots here; given his history, he's just as likely to get hurt as he is to bust out anyway.
