Mad About MaxWednesday, September 19, 2012
Tigers right-hander Max Scherzer had a 6-0 record, a 1.29 ERA and a 60/9 K/BB ratio over his last seven starts entering Tuesday night’s matchup with the A’s. He was a guy playing major roles on many hard-charging fantasy squads.
But now his status is a question mark entering the final two weeks of MLB’s regular season.
Scherzer was lifted after just two innings Tuesday night in Detroit because of what’s being described as “right shoulder fatigue.” An MRI taken soon after the sudden departure ruled out serious structural damage, but Scherzer will be shut down completely for the next couple of days and is sure to miss at least one turn in the Tigers’ rotation.
It’s a tough blow to fantasy owners relying on him for continued dominance, and it may kill the Tigers’ chances of scoring a postseason spot. They won on Tuesday but are three games back of the White Sox in the American League Central and five back of the Orioles for the second Wild Card. With a wounded No. 2 starter.
Chapman Nearly Ready To Return
The Reds had a 10 1/2-game lead over the Cardinals in the National League Central standings when they decided to shut down left-hander Aroldis Chapman because of minor shoulder fatigue. Over a week later, that lead has grown to 11 games. And Chapman has been the beneficiary of a nice period of uninterrupted rest.
The 24-year-old southpaw is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday in front of the Reds’ trainers and coaches and could be cleared to return to the back end of the Cincinnati bullpen as soon as this weekend if all goes well in the workout.
Chapman has registered a superb 1.60 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 119/20 K/BB ratio across 67 2/3 innings this season while converting 35 of 40 save opportunities. Jonathan Broxton will be pushed back into a setup role.
