May 1B and DH RankingsMonday, May 06, 2013
Welcome to the May first baseman and designated hitter rankings. Players are ranked based on how I believe they will perform in 5x5 leagues over the remainder of the season. Along with the position rankings, you'll soon find a fully updated top 300 list.

First Baseman Rankings
Dropping off: Mike Olt (No. 37), Casey Kotchman (No. 39), Brett Wallace (No. 40)
- Fielder has been far and away the best of the 'big four' first basemen so far, though I had him ranked below the other three initially. So, the question was whether it was time to change that. Votto and Gonzalez both have excellent OPSs, but neither is hitting as for as much power as hoped. Gonzalez has also been handicapped by the dreadful play behind him in the Dodger lineup; his 25 singles, seven doubles and 11 walks have turned into just five runs scored.
Then there's the sore-footed Pujols. Of course, he's still off to a far better start than in 2012; he was hitting .184/.237/.269 until finally hitting his first homer on May 6 last season. Pujols rebounded from there and was a top fantasy first baseman the rest of the way. The difference this year is his plantar fasciitis. While Pujols is tough enough to play through it, perhaps it's taking a toll on his numbers. That said, he did hit three homers last week anyway. I'm more concerned about the possibility of a three-week absence than of continued diminished production. So, for now, I'm going Votto, Fielder, Pujols and then Gonzalez.
- If Chris Davis can hit .280 the rest of the way, then maybe he's a top-five first baseman. I think something in the .250-.260 range is more likely. He's a threat to reach 40 homers, though.
Designated Hitter Rankings
- Obviously, it's a short list. For reference, if I were to rank the DHs alongside the first baseman, Ortiz would slot in 10th behind Chris Davis and Hafner would come in 26th, below Belt, with the caveat that he has more short-term value than that.
