May Outfielder Rankings

Monday, May 06, 2013

Welcome to the May outfielder rankings. Players are ranked based on how I believe they will perform in 5x5 leagues over the remainder of the season. Along with the position rankings, you'll soon find a fully updated top 300 list.

Outfielder Rankings

Dropping off: Collin Cowgill (No. 91), Roger Bernadina (No. 101), Chris Coghlan (No. 108), Brennan Boesch (No. 111), Darin Mastroianni (No. 112), Brett Jackson (No. 115), Jesus Guzman (No. 118), Tyler Moore (No. 119)

  • I'm keeping Trout atop the outfield rankings, but the top five has really tightened up since the preseason. In March, I had a clear top two in Trout and Braun with little separating them, a gap down to Gonzalez and Kemp and then another gap to Harper, Justin Upton and Bautista, with the Stanton-Ellsbury-Heyward-Cespedes-McCutchen tier after that. Now I could say that top five is just one tier. I gave some thought to moving Braun ahead of Trout since the Biogenesis stuff has died down. I'm still very confident in Trout, but it doesn't look like the guys hitting behind him are going to drive him in as often as anticipated.

As for Gonzalez, Harper and Upton, the latter two are probably safer choices, given Gonzalez's history of injury, but I think Coors Field gives Gonzalez enough of an edge to make up for that. It will help his run and RBI numbers that Fowler is hitting and Tulowitzki is (relatively) healthy.

  • Kemp in the sixth spot makes me nervous; while he's swinging better the last two weeks, the power still isn't there yet. Going in, though, the expectation should have been that April would be his worst month as he completed his recovery from shoulder surgery.

  • Stanton probably would have come in 12th pre-hamstring injury.

  • Crisp, Chris Young and Bourjos are all about 10 spots lower than where they'd be were they healthy.

  • I'm keeping the faith with the other Upton. Bossman Junior is striking out at a terrifying rate and he's even been caught on half of his steal attempts, but he has a history of looking awful for a month and quickly snapping out of it. He makes a good buy-low target.

  • My aggressive Ichiro ranking hasn't paid off yet, and since the Yankees have, to my surprise, gone away from him as a No. 2 hitter, I've dropped him 17 spots in the rankings. I still think he's going to get several cheap homers at Yankee Stadium, but I was also counting on him being an asset in runs scored and that's not going to happen while he's hitting in the bottom half of the order.
