Halladay Hits A Wall

Monday, May 06, 2013

Phillies right-hander Roy Halladay had another disastrous outing on Sunday against the lowly Marlins, yielding nine earned runs in 2 1/3 innings as part of an eventual 14-2 loss. Following the start he revealed to reporters (after first alerting the Phillies' training staff) that he has been experiencing some mild discomfort in his throwing shoulder since his April 24 start against the Pirates.

The Phillies will get Roy checked out this week in Los Angeles by joint specialist Dr. Lewis Yocum and are all but certain to place the veteran starter on the 15-day disabled list. Halladay has a hideous 8.65 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 34 1/3 innings this season and the 14-18 Phils simply can't keep running him out there. Adam Morgan is likely to be called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take over the vacant rotation spot.

It would have been a crazy thought just a few months ago, but Halladay can be dropped in most standard fantasy formats. There is clearly something wrong with him physically and it's not going to suddenly get better overnight.

Craig Heating Up As RBI Flow

Cardinals first baseman Allen Craig batted just .263/.297/.358 over 101 plate appearances during a sluggish April, but he maintained his timely hitting with runners in scoring position and still managed to eke out 18 RBI in 24 games. That clutch production has continued in May, and "Wrench" is also now raking in all situations.

Craig went 2-for-5 with a double, a triple and four RBI in the Cardinals' 10-1 thrashing of the Brewers on Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee and is now hitting .409/.435/.682 with seven RBI in five games since the calendar flipped from April to May. Serving as St. Louis' primary cleanup man, he is on pace for 131 RBI.

Buy low in fantasy leagues if you still can. Craig, 28, is about to go on an extended offensive tear.
