June Starter Rankings

Monday, June 03, 2013

Welcome to the June starter rankings. As always, players are ranked based on how I believe they will perform in 5x5 scoring over the rest of the season. Along with the position rankings, you'll find a fully updated top 300 list.

Starting pitcher Rankings

Dropping off: Jaime Garcia (49th), Anthony Bass (135th), Juan Nicasio (137th), Ricky Romero (141st), Jeff Karstens (142nd), Wily Peralta (143rd), Vance Worley (145th), Jeremy Hefner (146th), Brandon Maurer (147th)

  • Let's hope the White Sox dodged another bullet with Sale, who missed a start last month with a sore shoulder. He's looked like a top-10 pitcher so far, but I have too many concerns to rank him up in that territory. 26th is probably a bit of a copout, but I think he'll spend time on the DL at some point.

  • The Braves may have a tough choice to make later this month when Beachy makes his return from Tommy John surgery. Hudson has been the team's weakest starter to date, but it seems likely that he, Minor and Maholm are all safe. That would put either Teheran or Medlen in line for a move to the pen. Medlen may rate as a modest disappointment so far, but he has a fine 3.48 ERA through 11 starts. However, he's also never made more than 20 starts in a season, so the Braves may well get more out of him later in the season if they put him in the pen for a month or two now. Plus, given his history, he's more likely than Teheran to be a real asset in relief. Taking that into account, I've dropped Medlen in the rankings this month. Teheran moves up to No. 56, though I'd probably have him another 5-8 spots higher if I were certain he'd stick.

  • The monthly Jose Fernandez disclaimer: for the short-term, I'd put him 20 spots higher than his current No. 76. He's ranked that low because he's likely to be shut down for the entire final month of the season.

  • Liriano, Cashner and Colon are some of the other guys I'd have higher for June alone.
