June Second Baseman Rankings

Monday, June 03, 2013

Welcome to the June second baseman rankings. As always, players are ranked based on how I believe they will perform in 5x5 scoring over the rest of the season. I try to list players at the positions at which they're most valuable, so if you can't find that second baseman you're looking for, check shortstop instead. Included along with the position rankings you'll find a fully updated top 300 list.

Second Baseman Rankings

Dropping Off: Chris Nelson (24th), Alexi Casilla(34th)

  • Seattle's Nick Franklin is listed over with the shortstops, but he'd place 17th here. Same goes for Derek Dietrich. He'd come in 23rd. It's possible the Marlins will send him down when Solano returns, but that will probably depend on how well he performs over the next 7-14 days. If Dietrich hits, then Solano could come off the disabled list as a utilityman.

  • Profar has been impressive enough in his two weeks with the Rangers that the team is now talking about keeping him around for the long haul. I think we'll eventually see him get worked out in the outfield and begin to pick up some starts in left field, if not center.

  • Rickie Weeks hit just .173 with one RBI (on a solo homer) for the month of May, and Brewers manager Ron Roenicke has started sitting him against some righties lately. It was July 1 before Weeks finally busted out of his first-half slump last year, and he went on to hit .269 with 15 homers, 58 runs scored, 41 RBI and 10 steals over the final three months. Those sticking with him can hope that the same thing happens this year or maybe even that he'll start up a bit earlier. Still, he's playing even worse right now than he did the first couple of months of 2012.
