July 1B and DH Rankings

Monday, July 01, 2013

Here are the July first baseman and designated hitter rankings. As always, players are ranked based on how I believe they will perform in 5x5 scoring over the rest of the season. I try to list players at the positions at which they're most valuable, so if you can't find that second baseman you're looking for, check shortstop instead. Included along with the position rankings you'll find a fully updated top 300 list.

First Baseman and Designated Hitter Rankings

Dropping off: Mark Teixeira (12th), Corey Hart (16th)

  • Since it was just going to be a two-person DH ranking this month, I folded Ortiz and Hafner into the first base rankings here.

  • While the Pirates are sporting the game's best record, there's an obvious opportunity for an upgrade at first base. Jones is struggling, and while Sanchez has done well against lefties, he's hit just .210/.322/.360 versus right-handers. Besides, if Jones does start hitting, right field would still be open for him. It remains to be seen whether any first basemen will change hands this month. Maybe Morneau will if the Twins aren't feeling overly sentimental, and he'd be a good fit. Konerko would seem to be an obvious choice as a free-agent-to-be on a lousy team, but he has full no-trade protection and the White Sox appear disinclined to move him. Morrison can be had, but the price would be substantial and he's far from a sure thing. Lind isn't going anywhere if the Jays remain in contention. Ike Davis could be available, but the Mets won't want to sell low. Kyle Blanks, listed here as an outfielder, likely could have been had a month ago, but probably not now. Pena might not be any sort of upgrade.

  • Ike Davis is currently at .288/.432/.627 with five homers and a 14/15 K/BB ratio in 59 at-bats for Triple-A Las Vegas. He return should come soon.

  • A lot of the guys in the 20s (Dunn, Carter, Moss) are currently outperforming some of the guys in the teens here (LaRoche, Berkman, Davis), and I gave considerable thought on which ones to move up. In the end, I thought only Hosmer and Lind were worth a big bump.
