July Second Baseman Rankings

Monday, July 01, 2013

Welcome to the July second baseman rankings. As always, players are ranked based on how I believe they will perform in 5x5 scoring over the rest of the season. I try to list players at the positions at which they're most valuable, so if you can't find that second baseman you're looking for, check shortstop instead. Included along with the position rankings you'll find a fully updated top 300 list.

Second Baseman Rankings

Dropping Off: Chris Getz (36th), Mark DeRosa (38th), Ryan Roberts (39th)

  • Second base is looking deeper than third with Kinsler, Hill and Utley all back healthy and Rendon and Profar up and contributing. There was certainly more competition for the 6-12 spots here than there was at third.

  • Johnson picked a bad time to slump for the Rays, what with Wil Myers coming up to take an outfield spot. Johnson is getting some at-bats at third at the moment with Evan Longoria hurting and he could see time at DH if he starts outproducing Luke Scott. His value has taken a hit, though.

  • Giavotella is getting another look at second base for the Royals after hitting .289/.376/.425 with seven homers and seven steals in 287 at-bats for Triple-A Omaha. It's probably his last chance to establish himself in Kansas City after he flopped in 178 at-bats in 2011 (.649 OPS) and in 181 at-bats last year (.574 OPS). He should be better this time around, but he lacks the power or speed to make a big impact in fantasy leagues.

  • Ackley rejoined the Mariners as an outfielder after hitting .365/.472/.500 in 104 at-bats for Triple-A Tacoma. Frankly, I would have liked to have seen more power from him; between the majors and minors, he has three homers and 12 doubles in 264 at-bats this year. The Mariners might hope that since Ackley no longer has to focus on his defense at second, it could aid his chances of breaking out offensively. I'm not convinced that's the case, and now he's going to have to show better power in order to be an adequate major league regular. He doesn't seem like a great bet for the second half.
