August Catcher Rankings

Monday, August 05, 2013

Welcome to the August catcher rankings. As always, players are ranked based on how I believe they'll perform in 5x5 scoring over the rest of the season. Included along with the position rankings is an updated top 300 list. I try to list players at the positions at which they're most valuable, so if you can't find that second baseman you're looking for, check shortstop instead.

Catcher Rankings

Dropping off: Yasmani Grandal (No. 20), Mike Zunino (No. 21), Kurt Suzuki (No. 30), Rob Brantly (No. 31), Francisco Cervelli (No. 36), Jesus Montero (No. 41), Brayan Pena (No. 45)

  • With Albert Pujols down, I'd like to see the Angels start giving Hank Conger some time at DH. His throwing has improved considerably this year, so talk of moving him off catcher permanently has died down. However, he has the bat to contribute as more than just a twice-per-week guy behind the plate. Right now, the Angels are having Chris Iannetta and Conger alternate behind the plate, and it's not working for either of them; Conger hit .175 in 44 plate appearances last month, while Iannetta came in at .162 in 45 plate appearances.

  • Alex Avila just had his best month since 2011 in hitting .269 with three homers and 19 RBI in July. It'd be huge for the Tigers if he could keep it up, especially with Jhonny Peralta facing a suspension. I was encouraged enough to bump him up to No. 18, but it's hard to go much higher than that on a guy who hit .177 with six times as many strikeouts (67) as extra-base hits (11) in the first half.

  • It sounds like Travis d'Arnaud will soon join the Mets in place of John Buck, who is expected to spend a few days on paternity leave this week. He'll probably head back to the minors after Buck returns, but he could be the Mets' top catcher in September if things break right.
