September 1B and DH Rankings

Tuesday, September 03, 2013

Here are the September first baseman and designated hitter rankings. As always, players are ranked based on how I believe they will perform in 5x5 scoring over the rest of the season. I try to list players at the positions at which they're most valuable, so if you can't find that second baseman you're looking for, check shortstop instead. Included along with the position rankings is a fully updated top 300 list.

First Baseman and Designated Hitter Rankings

Dropping off: Albert Pujols (No. 29), Ryan Howard (No. 33), Gaby Sanchez (No. 35)

  • Since it was just going to be a two-person DH ranking this month, I folded Ortiz and Hafner into the first base rankings here.

  • Justin Morneau was going to be ranked 10th before the trade and still comes in 10th after the move to Pittsburgh. He doesn't get to hit behind Joe Mauer any longer, but he might not have gotten to hit behind Mauer much in September anyway and hitting behind a healthy Andrew McCutchen sounds pretty good. Unfortunately, the Pirates are batting him sixth right now, but he might replace Pedro Alvarez in the cleanup spot if Alvarez keeps slumping. The league switch isn't much of a problem; Morneau has hit just as well in interleague games in his career as he has against AL teams.

  • Garrett Jones's three-year run in the middle of the Pirates lineup appears at an end, though he will get some outfield starts until Starling Marte returns. All things considered, the Pirates are probably better off playing Jose Tabata over him out there.

  • Unfortunately, the oblique strain suffered by the Mets' Ike Davis will likely be a season-ender. Lucas Duda, who was in line for more outfield time with the Marlon Byrd trade, can now play first base against right-handers, which will mean more outfield starts for Andrew Brown and Matt den Dekker.
