Daily Dose: D-Rob to the DL

Tuesday, April 08, 2014

David Robertson is off to a rocky start as Mariano Rivera's successor in the Bronx. However, it has nothing to do with his performance on the mound, as Yankees manager Joe Girardi announced Monday that the 28-year-old right-hander is headed to the 15-day disabled list with a Grade 1 strain of his left groin.

Robertson suffered the injury during his appearance Sunday against the Blue Jays. While he wasn't concerned initially, he still felt it when he woke up Monday and an MRI confirmed the strain. The hope right now is that he'll only have to miss the minimum 15 days.

Shawn Kelley notched his first career save in Robertson's absence during New York's home opener on Monday, tossing a perfect ninth inning against the Orioles. The 29-year-old right-hander owns a 3.72 ERA and 195/62 K/BB ratio over 183 2/3 innings in the majors and should get the majority of the save chances in the short-term. If he hasn't been picked up in your fantasy league yet, be sure to change that.

Editor's Note: Rotoworld's partner FanDuel is hosting a one-day, $35,000 Fantasy Baseball league for Tuesday night's MLB games. It's $25 to join and first prize is $6,000. Starts at 7:05pm ET on Tuesday. Here's the FanDuel link.

Moore Bad News?

We saw a potentially troubling development for the Rays on Monday evening, as left-hander Matt Moore was forced to exit his start against the Royals due to elbow soreness. He allowed one run over 4 1/3 innings before exiting.

We should know more after Moore goes for an MRI on Tuesday, but the Rays have said that "there's no reason to believe it's serious at this time." Still, it wouldn't be surprising if he ends up on the disabled list even if tests come back negative. It's worth noting that the 24-year-old missed more than a month with elbow soreness last year, though Rays head athletic trainer Ron Porterfield told Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times that this injury appears to be less severe. Anyway, they'll cross their fingers for now.

The Rays are already without Jeremy Hellickson until late May or early June following elbow surgery, so Jake Odorizzi is currently taking up the fifth spot in the starting rotation. If Moore needs to miss some time, we could see Cesar Ramos move from the starting rotation to the bullpen or Nate Karns or Erik Bedard come up from Triple-A.

Mesoraco Activated

Devin Mesoraco was forced to begin the season on the 15-day disabled list following an oblique injury toward the end of spring training, but he's ready to make an impact. After making it through three minor league rehab games without incident, the 25-year-old backstop was activated by the Reds on Monday.

The Reds are hoping for big things from Mesoraco this year, as he's poised to take over as the starting catcher job this season now that Ryan Hanigan is with the Rays. While he owns a .225/.282/.359 batting line in the majors thus far, his playing time has been sporadic at best. It's easy to forget that he's just two years removed from being considered a consensus top-20 prospect.

Mesoraco has only hit .199/.257/.324 against right-handed pitching in the big leagues, so he'll have to turn that around to be an asset, but he has pop in his bat and plays half of his games in a hitter-friendly environment. Not a bad combo. He's relevant in two-catcher mixed fantasy leagues at the very least. Not a bad idea if you're still looking for a Wilson Ramos replacement.
