May Catcher Rankings

Monday, May 05, 2014

Welcome to the May rankings. Players are ranked based on how I believe they will perform in 5x5 leagues over the remainder of the season. Included along with the position rankings is an updated top 300 list. I try to list players at the positions at which they're most valuable, so if you can't find that second baseman you're looking for, check shortstop instead.

  • What? You weren’t expecting me to drop Mauer and Santana already, were you?

  • Always worth remembering with catchers: they get worse as the year goes along. Right now, we have 18 true catchers with 50 at-bats and .750 OPSs. That figure will go down as the battered fingers and sore knees pile up.

  • In the preseason, I had quite a drop off after the top 11, with Gattis occupying the last spot. Now I feel the drop off comes after No. 12, with Montero joining the top group. There really isn’t a lot separating the guys after that. Castro was overrated going in, but he does have the advantage of hitting third and he’ll get more at-bats than most of the guys behind him. Mesoraco, Pinto and Norris might have the most upside of the rest of the field, but injuries for Mesoraco and playing time issues for the other two cost them in the rankings.

  • Pierzynski is one I’m not sure about. He’s still seems to be the same hitter he’s always been, and he should be some team’s starting catcher the rest of the way. I’m just fairly well convinced that the Red Sox would be better off going with Christian Vazquez, a far superior defensive catcher. But even if they do go that route later on, Vazquez probably wouldn’t hit enough to be a top-30 catcher.
