Week Ahead: Stars and Stripes

Friday, July 04, 2014

Happy 4th of July, everyone! While you spend time celebrating the good ol' USA with friends and family this weekend, make sure you find a few minutes to sneak away and set your fantasy lineups for the coming week.

We've got a solid crop of two-start pitchers lined up, including stars such as Yu Darvish, Masahiro Tanaka, Justin Verlander, Stephen Strasburg, Adam Wainwright, Madison Bumgarner, Johnny Cueto and more.

The majority of hurlers set to go twice fall in the mid-tier range, however. I'll run through a few of the names that stand out to me (and could very well be available in your league) below.

* Seattle's Chris Young strikes me as one of the best options on the table this week. He's available in about 85 percent of Yahoo! leagues despite being on a heck of a run right now (he's 3-0 with a 1.44 ERA in his past four turns), and he's slated for two starts at home, where he's 5-1 with a 2.19 ERA on the season.

* If you're looking for upside in the K department, you might want to consider young right-handers Trevor Bauer and Jake Odorizzi. Neither has been too consistent with his results overall, but both can miss bats and they're each scheduled for a pair of home starts. In particular I like Odorizzi, who has piled up 101 strikeouts in 88 innings this year and owns a 2.70 ERA at Tropicana Field.

* What to make of Vance Worley? After a miserable run in Minnesota, he has been locked in since joining the Pirates rotation, with three quality starts in three tries. He'll get two fairly tough match-ups on the road, so this week should be a good test of his legitimacy.

* Jacob deGrom has a 2.49 ERA in four starts at home but still hasn't won at Citi Field. He'll get two chances to do so in The Week Ahead.

Streamer City

The following pitchers are generally available in over 50 percent of fantasy leagues and have favorable match-ups this week:

American League

Wednesday, 7/9: Kyle Gibson @ SEA

Gibson has been outstanding in four of his last five outings. He's faced the Mariners once this year, when he held them to one run over seven innings in mid-May.

Friday, 7/11: Kevin Gausman vs. NYY

Let the hard-throwing young right-hander roll against a Yankees lineup that ain't what it used to be.

Friday, 7/11: Danny Duffy vs. DET

In the month of June, Duffy went 3-2 with a 1.69 ERA while allowing just one homer in six starts.

National League

Wednesday, 7/9: Josh Collmenter vs. MIA

Collmenter has been consistently solid this year, especially at home where he owns a 3.38 ERA.

Friday, 7/11: Jeff Locke @ CIN

The lefty is pitching great and still unowned in 90 percent of Yahoo! leagues.

Friday, 7/11: Andrew Heaney @ NYM

He's gotten off to a rough start, but Heaney's immense talent may show through against a Mets team with the fourth-worst OPS in the NL.
