Here are the August Rankings. Players are ranked for the remainder of the season based on how I believe they’ll perform in 5x5 leagues. Players are also listed at the positions where they’re most valuable, so if you don’t see that third baseman you’re looking for, he’s probably listed at second or short.

Starting pitcher Rankings
Dropping off: Matt Cain (No. 28), CC Sabathia (No. 86), Tony Cingrani (No. 125), Jaime Garcia (No. 126), Brandon Cumpton (No. 128), Ricky Nolasco (No. 129), Bronson Arroyo (No. 130)
- I’m starting to try to account for pitchers who might get shut down early. Tyson Ross would have been a least a half-dozen spots higher on merit, but I don’t think he’ll be allowed to keep pitching through the end of September. We already know teammate Jesse Hahn won’t be; he’s probably getting shut down the first week or two of next month.
I imagine the Jays will want to shut down Marcus Stroman and Drew Hutchinson, though it will be tough if they remain in the AL East race.
The Royals probably won’t be in contention, so I’d expect to see both Yordano Ventura and Danny Duffy shut down, which is something I factored into their rankings.
Drew Smyly’s chances of being shut down seem a lot greater now in Tampa Bay than they did in Detroit.
As for the Mets and Zack Wheeler, I expect he’ll be pushed back some in September, with the team perhaps going to a six-man rotation, but I don’t know that he’ll need to be shut down.
- I dropped Matt Garza 10 spots while waiting for additional news about his oblique injury.
