Daily Dose: Not Yu Too ...

Thursday, August 14, 2014

The long list of prominent injured Rangers grew on Wednesday, with staff ace Yu Darvish landing on the 15-day disabled list due to what is currently being termed “right elbow inflammation.” The hope is that Darvish will only have to miss two starts, but an MRI is planned for Thursday and an exact diagnosis probably won’t be revealed until Friday.

A red flag was flung high in the air Saturday when Darvish got pounded for six runs -- five earned -- on nine hits and four walks in a loss to the lowly Astros. The right-hander then reported arm discomfort during a regularly-scheduled between-starts bullpen session on Monday.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels told reporters Wednesday that he doesn’t believe there is anything wrong with Yu’s ulnar collateral ligament -- the ligament that usually has to be repaired via Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery -- but Daniels can’t say that with any sort of certainty until further tests are run. Like Thursday’s MRI. So stay tuned.

Darvish, 27, owns a 3.27 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 11.2 K/9 through 545 1/3 career major league innings.

Pineda Looks Sharp In Return

Yankees right-hander Michael Pineda allowed just two hits and one run over five innings Wednesday against the Orioles in his first start since being ejected -- and subsequently suspended -- on April 23 for pine tar use. He walked none and struck out four, but the Yankees’ bullpen couldn’t hold the lead at Camden Yards and so Pineda was left with a no-decision.

Pineda suffered a muscle strain in his upper back while trying to stay in pitching shape during that pine tar suspension -- which was slated to last 10 games -- and wound up missing nearly four months. Now that he has returned to the major league rotation and is seemingly fully healthy, the 25-year-old needs to be owned in all mixed fantasy leagues.

Pineda boasts a 1.82 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and 19/3 K/BB ratio in 24 2/3 innings (five starts) this season.

Gyorko Going Strong For Padres

Padres second baseman Jedd Gyorko had one of his most productive games of the 2014 season on Wednesday night, doubling twice and adding two singles in San Diego’s 5-3 win over the visiting Rockies.

Gyorko is now 19-for-57 (.333) since returning in late July from a bad bout of plantar fasciitis. He looks much more comfortable at the plate and in the field, and the 25-year-old is well on his way to finishing the season on a strong note. This is really positive news for a player who signed a five-year, $35 million contract extension (with an option that could extend that deal to 2020) back in April.

Gyorko had a cool .745 OPS with 23 home runs and 63 RBI in 125 games last year as a rookie.

Tulo’s Season Comes To A Close

The Rockies announced late Wednesday night that star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki is scheduled to undergo season-ending surgery for a labrum injury in his left hip on Friday in Vail, Colorado.

The 29-year-old was setting himself up nicely for his first National League MVP prior to injuring his hip on a groundout in late July, boasting a .340/.432/.603 batting line with 21 home runs, 52 RBI, and 71 runs scored in 91 games. Josh Rutledge will finish out the 2014 season as the Rockies’ primary shortstop.

Tulowitzki is one of the best players in baseball when healthy, but he has averaged just 107 games per season.
