  • It’s remarkable what Francisco Cervelli is doing, but he remains a giant injury risk going forward. Also, he’s been busted for steroids before, so who really knows? Devin Mesoraco is another catcher who would be ranked higher for the short term but seems like a poor bet to remain healthy.

  • A’s prospect Sean Murphy got some consideration for a spot at the bottom of the rankings. He’s been really solid, hitting .305/.343/.509 for Double-A Midland, and it’s easy to see Oakland trading Jonathan Lucroy before the deadline. Still, I’m not sure that even if Lucroy goes, they wouldn’t just ride it out with Bruce Maxwell and Josh Phegley rather than start Murphy’s service-time clock.

  • It was also tempting to put 2016 first-round Zack Collins on the list, given that he’s hitting .275/.455/.470 in Double-A and catcher is an area of need for the White Sox with Welington Castillo suspended through late August. Collins, though, remains shaky defensively, and it’s still hard to say whether he has a chance of lasting behind the plate. It makes more sense for the White Sox to allow him to continue to refine his game in the minors than to rush him to the majors in a rebuilding year.
