MLB DFS Plays: Thursday

Thursday, July 12, 2018

This article aims to find the best overall MLB DFS Plays and Bargains to help you construct a cash-worthy lineup. The following write-ups were constructed earlier in the day, meaning injury information, weather, and lineup cards could alter the fantasy landscape. Checking starting lineups and scanning our MLB Headlines Feed should keep you in the loop.

PITCHER

Ross Stripling – LA Dodgers (at San Diego)

I feel like I’m beating a dead horse by continuously recommending pitchers against the Padres, but that seems like the best move again tonight. We saw Dodgers RHP Kenta Maeda shut down San Diego with one earned run and nine strikeouts through 5.2 innings yesterday, and Stripling could have a similar performance this evening. Stripling was recently named to the All Star team, a much deserved honor while holding a 2.22 ERA with 103 strikeouts over 89.1 innings. That punch-out rate should be on full display against a Padres’ offense that K’s almost more than any other team.

Also Consider: James Paxton, Max Scherzer, Steven Matz

CATCHER / FIRST BASE

Steve Pearce – Boston (vs Toronto)

Pearce has been on fire for the Red Sox, racking up nine hits, three doubles, one homer, and five RBI over his most recent five starts. It’s surprising how most of that damage came away from hitter-friendly Fenway Park. He’ll get the added benefit of playing in that generous ballpark tonight in a righty/lefty matchup against his former teammate, J.A. Happ. While Happ has been pretty good this season, regression has taken hold over his past three starts. As a result, Boston carries the highest run-scoring projection of this evening slate; I’m leaning towards Pearce as a high-upside option within that.

Also Consider: Mark Reynolds, Cody Bellinger

SECOND BASE

Josh Harrison – Pittsburgh (vs Milwaukee)

On a night where there are plenty of top pitching options taking the bump (Scherzer, Kluber, Paxton, etc), the Pirates emerge as one of the better teams to stack while facing mediocre Milwaukee LHP Wade Miley. Pittsburgh has several economical fillers to exploit this promising matchup, and Harrison is one of the more confident choices within that.

Also Consider: Eduardo Nunez, Joey Wendle

THIRD BASE

David Freese - Pittsburgh (vs Milwaukee)

Keeping the theme of stacking Pirates against Miley, David Freese makes for a cheap platoon option for only $2500 on FanDuel. Most of the third basemen on the evening slate are too expensive when considering their respective matchups, so falling back on Freese in this non-imposing draw makes for a viable strategy.

Also Consider: Travis Shaw, Justin Turner

SHORTSTOP

Jordy Mercer - Pittsburgh (vs Milwaukee)

You could look towards Bogaerts, Turner, or Segura at shortstop, but it’s difficult to justify shelling out that kind of salary for each of their respective matchups. Even though Jordy Mercer factors to hit towards the bottom of Pittsburgh’s order, he’ll stand to benefit from the aforementioned generous draw against Milwaukee LHP Wade Miley. Similar to the rationale outlined for teammate David Freese, I don’t mind falling back on Mercer while looking for upside at other positions.

Also Consider: Xander Bogaerts, Chris Taylor

OUTFIELD

Starling Marte - Pittsburgh (vs Milwaukee)

I’m realizing this article has turned into propaganda for a Pittsburgh stack. Take note that Harrison and Marte are the most crucial components within that, while Freese and Mercer are just cheap fillers if you find yourself stuck at those infield spots. Marte makes for a confident choice in this righty/lefty matchup against Miley, and he’s one of my favorite hitting options for cash games. He has an excellent matchup/floor/ceiling combination while most other outfielders are looking at tricky draws.

Matt Kemp – LA Dodgers (at San Diego)

Kemp checks in with a mid-range $3600 on FanDuel that makes for a comfortable proposition in cash games. Kemp has been fantastic this season, and he’s a reliable option to consider through all formats. San Diego RHP Tyson Ross has been struggling lately while allowing 15 earned runs through seven innings over his past two starts. The Dodgers could inflict even more damage tonight.

Also Consider: JD Martinez, Joc Pederson, Mitch Haniger, Lorenzo Cain, Christian Yelich, Kevin Kiermaier
