Wrap-up: Sonoma & Road America

This past weekend both the Cup and Nationwide Series held their “go fast, turn right” (and left) road course events. The Sonoma track in Sonoma, California was the site of the Sprint Cup Toyota/Save Mart 350(k). The Road America course in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin hosted the Sargento 200. The Camping World Truck Series will return to action next week, June 28th (Thursday), for the UNOH 225 at Kentucky Speedway.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series

Time Trials
:

Marcos Ambrose received a $3,400 check for winning the Coors Light Pole Award. He put up a 95.262 mph lap. This is the No. 9 Ford driver's second career pole (he won his first last week at Michigan International Speedway) in 135 NSCS races. Ambrose led 11 laps and finished in eighth place. He moved up one spot to 16th in the 2012 point standings.

Did Not Qualify:
No. 30 Brian Simo.

Race Winner:
Clint Bowyer won the Toyota/Save Mart 350, his sixth victory in 233 NSCS races. This is the No. 15 Toyota driver's first victory and ninth top-10 finish in 2012. It is his first victory and fifth top-10 finish in seven races at Sonoma. He is the sixth consecutive first time Sprint Cup road race winner at Sonoma and eighth consecutive different winner of the Toyota/Save Mart 350. Bowyer moved up two spots to seventh in the 2012 NSCS point standings.

Rookie of the Race:
Josh Wise, the No. 26 Ford driver, started 40th and finished 30th. This was ahead of the rest of the 2012 Rookie of the Year contenders earning him the Rookie of the Race award. Wise, who made 14 of the 16 races so far this season, moved up one spot to 41st in the 2012 NSCS points.

Contingency Awards:
- Besides winning the race, Clint Bowyer and his team won several of the contingency race awards for this event. Bowyer won the $5,400 3M Lap Leader Award for leading the most laps (71 of 112),  $5,000 American Ethanol Green Flag Restart award for recording the fastest average speed on restarts and the $5,000 Mobil 1 Command Performance Driver of the Race award. Crew chief, Brian Pattie, won the $5,000 DIRECTV Crew Chief of the Race award presented to the crew chief of the driver who demonstrates the best qualifying and race finish for each event. Toyota Racing Development (TRD) won the $5,000 Mahle Clevite Engine Builder of the Race award.
- Rodney Childers, crew chief on the No. 55 Toyota driven by Brian Vickers wins the Moog Problem Solver of the Race award.  The $5,500 award goes to the crew chief that improves the most from first half of the race to the second half utilizing the 40 best lap times (improved 0.328 seconds). Vickers started the race in 21st and finished in fourth. Vickers, who only made three starts in 2012, moved up three spots to 36th in the points.
- Jeff Burton won the $5,000 USG Improving the Finish Award which goes to the driver who improves the most from start to finish. The No. 31 Chevrolet driver improved 24 places from 35th in the lineup to an 11th place finish. He moved up two spots to 19th in the standings.

Matt Kenseth leads the point standings by 11 points over Greg Biffle.

NASCAR Nationwide Series

Time Trials:

Camping World Truck Series regular Nelson Piquet Jr. received a $3,400 check for winning the Coors Light Pole Award at Road America. He put up a 109.516 mph lap in the No. 30 Chevrolet to start up front. This was his first Nationwide Series career pole in three starts. He led 19 laps and won the race.

Did Not Qualify:
NONE, only 43 cars entered.

Race Winner:
Nelson Piquet Jr. won the Sargento 200 at Road America, his first victory in three NASCAR Nationwide Series races. The No. 30 Chevrolet driver started on the pole and led the most laps (19 of 50) at the 4.048 mile road course in Elkhart Lakes, Wisconsin. Piquet, a Camping World Truck Series regular (No. 30),  is not eligible for driver points in this series.

Rookie of the Race:
Cole Whitt, the No. 88 Chevrolet driver, started 14th and finished ninth. This was ahead of the rest of the 2012 Rookie of the Year contenders earning him the Sunoco Rookie of the Race award. Whitt is currently fifth in the point standings.

Contingency Awards:
- Ricky Stenhouse Jr. makes the most improvement in the series since his 11th place finish was 14 places better than his last NNS finish. This earned the No. 6 Ford driver a $2,600 check and the Featherlite “Most Improved Driver” award. Stenhouse is currently third in the point standings.
- Besides winning the race, Nelson Piquet Jr. and his team won the rest of the Contingency Awards. Piquet won the $2,200 3M Lap Leader award for leading the most laps (19 of 50) and he also won the $2,000 Mobil 1 Driver of the Race award. Hendrick Engines won the $2,100 Mahle Clevite Engine Builder of the Race award. Piquet is a Camping World Truck Series regular (No. 30) and is ineligible for driver points in this series.

Points Leader:
Elliott Sadler leads the point standings by 11 points over No. 3 Chevrolet driver Austin Dillon.
