Looking Ahead: Just 41 Days

During the off-season, Looking Ahead gives a snapshot of where drivers finished in 2013 and what’s ahead for them in 2014. We will look at drivers who scored at least 400 points in the Cup Series and those who earned at least 250 points in the Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series.

With 41 days to go until the 2014 season-opening Daytona 500, here are some driver recaps followed by a tentative list of 2014 Sprint Cup Driver/Team lineups.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS):
Aric Almirola finished 18th in the standings and earned 913 points.
2013: Richard Petty Motorsports No. 43 Ford Fusion. In 36 starts, he had one top-five, six top-10s, led 11 laps, and had an 18.3 average start and an 18.8 average finish.  He also drove RPR’s No. 43 Ford Mustang in one Nationwide Series race; started eighth and finished ninth at Phoenix.
Best 2013 NSCS start: 1st at Talladega-October 20. He was not credited with a pole since qualifying was rained out and the field was set by the fastest time (his) in the first practice session.
Best 2013 NSCS finish: 5th at Loudon-July 14
Last career NSCS win: None so far.
2014: Almirola will return to the No. 43 Smithfield Foods Ford Fusion. Trent Owens has been assigned the crew chief position for the team.

Paul Menard finished 17th in the standings and earned 949 points.
2013: Richard Childress Racing No. 27 Chevrolet SS. In 36 starts, he had three top-fives, nine top-10s, led 72 laps and had a 16.0 averaged start and a 17.8 average finish. He also drove RCR’s No. 33 Chevrolet Camaro in four Nationwide Series races averaging an 8.0 start coupled with a 10.8 average finish.
Best 2013 NSCS starts: 4th at Michigan-June 16 and Fort Worth-November 3
Best 2013 NSCS finishes: 4th at Michigan-August 18 and Talladega-October 20
Last career NSCS win: Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 31, 2011.
2014: Menard returns to the No. 27 Menards Chevrolet SS. Slugger Labbe also returns as crew chief for the team.

Martin Truex Jr. finished 16th in the standings and earned 998 points.
2013: Michael_Waltrip Racing No. 56 Toyota Camry. In 36 starts, he had one win, seven top-fives, 15 top 10s and led 353 laps.
Best 2013 NSCS starts: 2nd at Talladega-May 5 and Dover-June 2
Best 2013 NSCS finish: Win at Sonoma-June 23
Last career NSCS win: Sonoma on June 23, 2013.
2014: Truex was released at the end of 2013 due to lack of sponsorship. He will drive the Furniture Row Racing No. 78 Chevrolet SS full-time in 2014. His crew from the MWR No. 56 team moves with him. Todd Berrier will lead the No. 78 crew.

NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS):
Reed Sorenson finished 18th in the standings and earned 524 points.
2013: The Motorsports Group No. 40 Chevrolet Camaro (20 races), Richard Petty Motorsports No. 43 Ford Mustang (7 races subbing for injured Michael Annett) and one race in the Leavine Family Racing No. 95 Ford Mustang. In the 28 starts, he scored one top-10, led one lap and had a 26.1 average start and a 25.3 average finish. Sorenson also drove Leavine Family Racing’s No. 95 Ford Fusion in six Sprint Cup races.
Best 2013 NNS start: 9th at Las Vegas-March 9
Best 2013 NNS finish: 10th at Richmond-April 26
Last career NNS win: Road America on June 25, 2011.
2014: Sorenson is in Daytona testing the Sprint Cup No. 32 Ford Fusion for Go Fas Racing but no firm plans on any races scheduled for any team in any series.

Mike Wallace finished 17th in the standings and earned 609 points.
2013: JD Motorsports No. 01 Chevrolet Camaro, In 33 starts he scored one top-10, led two laps and had a 29.5 average start and a 25.6 average finish.
Best 2013 NNS start: 19th at Las Vegas-March 9
Best 2013 NNS finish: 7th at Talladega-May 4
Last career NNS win: Daytona on July 2, 2004.
2014: Wallace left the JD Motorsports team at the end of 2013. No firm plans in place at this time.

Jeremy Clements finished 16th in the standings and earned 513 points.
2013: Clements Racing No. 51 Chevrolet Camaro. In 31 starts he scored two top-10s, led seven laps and had a 27.5 average start and a 23.6 average finish.
Best 2013 NNS starts: 21st at Dover-June 1 and Chicago-September 14
Best 2013 NNS finish: 9th at Talladega-May 4
Last career NNS win: None so far.
2014: No firm plans but Clements will most likely be fielding his No. 51 Camaro in as many races as possible in the NNS.

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS):
Joey Coulter finished 15th in the standings and earned 605 points.
2013: Kyle Busch Motorsports No. 18 Toyota Tundra. In 22 starts he scored three top fives, five top-10s, led 18 laps and had a 14.7 average start and a 16.6 average finish. He also made three starts in the Nationwide Series driving Joe Gibb Racing Nos. 54 and 18 Toyota Camrys; average start 10.3 coupled with a 17.7 average finish.
Best 2013 NCWTS start: 5th at Kentucky-June 27
Best 2013 NCWTS finish: 2nd at Kansas-April 20
Last career NCWTS win: Pocono on August 4, 2012
2014: At this time, KBM will not be fielding the No. 18 Toyota Tundra in 2014. Coulter will drive for a new team owned by Maurice Gallagher (Allegiant Travel) and fielded from the Coulter Motorsports shop.

Ron Hornaday Jr. finished 14th in the standings and earned 612 points.
2013: NTS Motorsports No. 9 Chevrolet Silverado (21 races) and one in Turner Scott Motorsports No. 34 Chevrolet Silverado. In 22 starts he scored five top-fives, 10 top-10s, led 44 laps and had a 13.0 average start and a 13.4 average finish.
Best 2013 NCWTS starts: 4th at Daytona-February 22 and Martinsville-October 26
Best 2013 NCWTS finishes: 3rd at Daytona-February 22 and Texas-November 1
Last career NCWTS win: Las Vegas on October 15, 2011.
2014: Hornaday was released by NTS Motorsports at the end of 2013. He drove the season finale at Homestead in the TSM No. 34.  No firm plans on a ride for 2014.
