Caps After Kansas (Spring)

Wednesday, May 17, 2017

As the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series put the short track schedule and the Geico 500 at Talladega SuperSpeedway behind them, it is time to take some big swings in the NASCAR Fantasy Live games.

It is taking a while for some of the top drivers to gain their natural level and 25 cent increases are not going to get them there quickly. This week, six drivers had increases of 50 cents in order to make the game more challenging. Three drivers dropped by 50 cents.

Clint Bowyer has improved in value to the range of $5.50 in the past 10 races and yet with a current cap of $21, he is still one of the best values in the game. Hearing that should make fantasy owner realize there are still some pay raises in his future and there is still time to place-and-hold him in the Fantasy Live game. There is an inherent danger in jumping on a bandwagon, however, because Stewart-Haas Racing has not been entirely bullet proof this season.

Jamie McMurray has steadily improved since the Kobalt 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway—and steady can be more important for players than rapid gains. His eighth-place finish last week in the GoBowling.com 400 at Kansas Speedway was the seventh time this season that he has earned a top-10 and the ninth time in the past 10 races that he scored a top-15. Once again, he was outpaced by teammate Kyle Larson, but McMurray’s price tag of $22.75 is much more manageable than Larson’s $27.75—which is the second-most in the game. That additional $5 will allow one to upgrade their bargain basement pick significantly.

Daniel Suarez earned his third seventh-place finish of the season at Kansas. It is only a matter of time before he improves that career-best result and challenges for a top-five. Suarez still has a ways to go before his salary cap—which is currently $17.50—begins to rival that of fellow freshman Erik Jones at $20, but as the weeks progress and the difference between these two drivers minimalizes, look for them to be an almost equal value.

Danica Patrick was involved in the fiery crash that sidelined Aric Almirola. Outside the infield care center, she wondered aloud what else could go wrong with the 2017 season. Her fantasy owners are wondering the same thing. She is frustrated to the point that speculation abounds about her future and this week’s salary cap drops 50 cents to $10. That might not be the bottom.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished 20th in the GoBowling.com 400, which is actually above his season average of 23.8. That puts him in the same range as Chris Buescher (who took a 50 increase to $10.75) and AJ Allmendinger ($14.75). The math is simple; Earnhardt is not worth a double sawbuck and until he earns a second top-10 this season, he will keep decreasing in value.

Chase Elliott was the remaining driver this week to lose 50 cents of his salary cap. He lands at $26.75. His 29th-place finish in the GoBowling.com 400 was the result of a pit road crash that was the fault of a member of his team and it was the third consecutive race in which he finished well outside the top 20. He is still one of the most expensive drivers in the game and players do not have much patience with the nine drivers who are priced greater than $25.
