Caps After Pocono (Spring)

Tuesday, June 13, 2017

This week, 15 veteran drivers experienced pay increases while only nine took cuts.

The drivers who lost value between the Axalta 400 at Pocono Raceway and FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway did so at a much greater rate and offset the difference. In fact, if one discounts Darrell Wallace Jr. (who was announced as the driver of the No. 43 late enough last week have him debut with a minimal price tag) the net effect was the difference of 25 cents.

Wallace settles in at $10 for the moment largely because that is the range in which the team has been performing. Before his accident, Aric Almirola climbed to $13.50 while Regan Smith could be signed for $10.75 at Dover International Speedway. Wallace does not yet have the experience to command a price in that range, but it will probably not take too long for him to settle into a comfortable groove. In his debut last week, he ran well on the track, but had numerous issues in the pits that kept him from finishing well.

For the fifth consecutive week, Daniel Suarez had a pay increase. This week, he jumped 50 cents to $19, but if a player had him on their roster following the Geico 500 at Talladega SuperSpeedway and has not released him, his cap value was $2.25 lower than that. Suarez keeps getting better and is going to continue to show increases as long as he challenges for top-10s. Last week at Pocono, he earned his fourth straight top-15.

Chris Buescher also took a notable increase this week. On the strength of six top-20 finishes in his last seven races, he has been one of the best bargains in the game. Even with a 50 cent increase this week, his price tag of $11.25 leaves plenty of room to upgrade one’s marquee pick, so he remains a “go-to” driver. In addition to better than average finishes, he has earned positive place-differential points in his last six races.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. was the biggest loser this week and with a current price of $18.25 he might still be a little expensive. He is not certain why he kept missing shifts last week at Pocono and that in itself is alarming. One has to wonder if the lost motor control has something to do with the consequences of his concussions.

Joey Logano dropped 50 cents this week and is about to drop outside of the 10-most expensive drivers in the game. Excuses could be made for his poor performance for a time and players might have been willing to be patient, but last week was the fifth straight race in which he finished outside the top 20. All of his poor finishes have come since he was penalized for an encumbered Richmond International Raceway win. One has to wonder how much wind that took out of the No. 22 team’s sails.

Kasey Kahne is also falling down the list. He was one of several drivers with brake failure at Pocono, and while he was alert enough to steer into the wall and not take a huge hit, it was big enough to retire the Chevrolet. That is his third consecutive DNF in the past three weeks, although he completed enough laps at Dover International Speedway to finish 17th.
