Caps After Watkins Glen

Tuesday, August 8, 2017

With wild card races on restrictor-plate, superspeedways and road courses in the rearview mirror, it is time to concentrate on the final push for the playoffs. There are still a handful of races that are essentially meaningless from a points’ standpoint for those locked into the championship, but no one can afford to give up momentum, so don’t expect teams to gamble too much.

Martin Truex Jr. was not the biggest mover in the NASCAR.com Fantasy Live game this week, but his 25 cent bump was significant because it puts him above the $28 mark to $28.25. In part, that is to allow Kyle Busch to keep his value of $28 while still differentiating between the two. These strategic partners have been the class of the field in the past several weeks, but with last week’s I Love New York 355 at Watkins Glen International win, Truex has proven to be more stable and consistent.

Matt Kenseth’s second-place finish and his current four-race, top-10 streak continues to make him one of the best values in the game. Advancing 75 cents to $27, his valuation change is going to slow down in the coming weeks because he has to outperform some of the strongest drivers in the field in order to command a higher price. He does not race like a man who is leaving his current team at the end of next year, but he is racing like a man who wants to make a good impression on the next car owner.

Daniel Suarez also increased by 75 cents this week. Joe Gibbs Racing has completely turned their season around and the rising tide is lifting everyone in the harbor. Like Kenseth, Suarez has four straight top-10s to his credit and last week’s third showed some versatility that is hard to ignore. His other top finishes were all on minimally-banked tracks, so this week’s performance at Michigan International Speedway is going to be critical in evaluating his potential for the remainder of the season.

Chase Elliott has become less consistent than the salary cap manager for Fantasy Live would like, so he lost 25 cents to $26.25. Entering a track on which he has three straight second-place finishes, that could be a boon for owners who are squeezing every last penny out of their roster.

Jimmie Johnson dropped 25 cents to $25, Kasey Kahne 50 cents to $16.50, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. 50 cent to $15.25 this week while Hendrick Motorsports tries to rise to the level of Joe Gibbs Racing and Furniture Row.

Aric Almirola was another significant loser this week because it is taking a while for him to get fully back up to speed following his injury. He was dropping fairly steadily before the accident and is still seeking a more realistic natural value. He can currently be signed for $12.50—50 cents less than last week—but unless Richard Petty Motorsports is able to reverse its fortune, he could be as low as $10 before the playoffs begin.
