Caps After Martinsville (Fall)

Tuesday, October 31, 2017

Since it was his first time in the playoffs, Ryan Blaney was expected to struggle somewhat under that pressure. Instead, he has logged five results of 11th or better in the past seven weeks. He posted a clutch top-five at Kansas to advance to round three and then did what was needed at Martinsville Speedway to earn enough points to continue to be in contention at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Better still, he keeps earning enough NASCAR Fantasy Live points to place and hold.

With five consecutive results of 16th to eighth, Kasey Kahne is earning enough to validate his $13.25 salary cap. This organization has been strong all season, but the No. 5 lacked the consistency to make them good fantasy values. They have not had this much momentum since the beginning of the season, so it might be time to trust that it will stick around.

Kyle Busch survived last week’s First Data 500 with the victory. The race was chaotic at the end and Busch bumped-and-ran his way past both Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin in the final run to the checkers. He wanted the win badly, but don’t expect him to rest now that he has an automatic berth in the finale. Busch took a 25 cent increase to $27.75 and is in striking distance of Martin Truex Jr.

We really expected AJ Allmendinger to run well last week at Martinsville. Both he and teammate Chris Buescher have shown improvement as an organization, but there comes a time when potential is no longer a good enough reason to keep his salary cap elevated. Allmendinger fell 50 cents to $9.50 and could be used provisionally in the final three weeks.

Kyle Larson lost some of his cache once he failed to advance to round three. The blown engine at Kansas Speedway was followed by another disappointing run at Martinsville and it doesn’t take much to lose the distinction of being the second-most expensive driver. Larson has not been as consistently strong as Busch, so he dropped to $27.50.

Likewise, teammate Jamie McMurray has lost much of his consistency with three consecutive results outside the top 25. What seemed so improbable while he was rattling off streaks of top-15s is now a reminder that momentum can shift with a single accident like the one he experienced at Talladega, so the No. 1 driver slipped to $26.50 this week.
