Caps After Texas (Fall)

Tuesday, November 7, 2017

As the season comes to an end, there are only two more opportunities to change the salary caps. The last two races of the year are hosted on drastically different track types and there are still some good values to be had on each.

The salary caps are modified by and large to reflect season-long strengths or weaknesses and as a result, Kevin Harvick lost a little value last week to drop to $27. He won at Texas Motor Speedway, but has not dominated a race in quite some time. The team seems to be a little concerned about Phoenix International Raceway despite six wins and two second-place finishes in the past 11 races, but he should be one of the anchors for the Can Am 500.

Despite taking a 50 cent increase to $13.25, Kasey Kahne is another strong contender. He has not scored a top-five since his surprise win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this summer, but he has dramatically improved in recent weeks to scored six consecutive results of 16th or better. In that span of races, he has an average finish of 12.2, which gives him one of the best price-to-points ratios in the game.

Ryan Blaney is another strong pick. In order to keep his name in the running for the championship, he has had to run consistently strong. Many experts have predicted he would struggle as a Young Driver, but he enters the weekend with four top-10s in the past five races. Solid runs like that got him to round three in contention and while it is unlikely he will make it to the Championship Four, he will almost certainly put another single-digit result in his top-10 column. For $17.50, players could do a lot worse.

At the very top of the order, Kyle Busch and Kyle Larson swapped positions. Busch took a 25 cent increase to $27.75 while Larson dropped an equal amount to $27.50. The two drivers have passed each other on the track during the past several weeks as well, with Busch winning Martinsville to lock into the Championship Round while Larson has now experienced three consecutive 30-something results. In the nine races that preceded this slump, Larson swept the top 15 with an average finish of 6.7.

The two drivers with the biggest losses this week are AJ Allmendinger and Michael McDowell. Both decreased by 50 cents in value to fall to $9.50. Driving for different teams, Allmendinger and McDowell have shown promise throughout the season, but they have taken different paths to get to their current value.

The No. 47 driver peaked in the middle of the year and has steadily lost ground since the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway when he was $12.

McDowell increased for a time during the late summer, but plateaued a month ago and then lost $1 since. The decision on which of these bargains to buy at Phoenix will come from practice times.
