23. Chris Buescher

Friday, January 12, 2018

With less experience than his teammate AJ Allmendinger and in a relatively new ride, it might seem a little odd for Chris Buescher to get ranked higher, but fantasy players’ agendas are not the same as the drivers. Buescher will be a better value overall in 2018 because of his inexperience; he lacks the flash of some of the other Young Guns like Erik Jones, Daniel Suarez, or even William Byron—and that means he will fly comfortably under the radar.

Buescher gained attention with his win at Pocono two years ago in a rain-shortened race. That made him attractive to JTG-Daugherty Racing, but it is not what makes him attractive to players. Last year, he had his best season to date—finishing in the front half of the field in just shy of 50 percent of his attempts. While he failed to score a top-five, he had a pair of sixth-place finishes and four total top-10s to his credit.

Most impressively, three of these top-10s came on unrestricted, intermediate speedways: Michigan International Speedway, Kansas Speedway, and Indianapolis Motor Speedway. These races were pivotal because those courses are not typically kind to dark horses. Buescher managed to be a great differentiator for those bold enough to take him.

Additionally, Buescher finished better than he started in 26 of his 36 attempts in 2017; all of his top-10s came after he qualified in the 20s and that banked a lot of place-differential points in games that offer them. His only top-10 start came at Sonoma Raceway and he fell 10 positions in that race. Consistency is critical in allowing fantasy players to select drivers on a weekly basis.

Fueling his improvement was the bold move by JTG-Daugherty to field a second team.

The sum of Buescher and Allmendinger was greater than the parts, even though the No. 47 had a worse run in 2017 than they did in 2016. As resources get allocated more effectively in their second year as a two-car team, fantasy players can expect better results for both drivers. For Allmendinger, it will be difficult to determine when he is going to be the best value. However, Buescher is liable to be undervalued on a number of occasions and that will make him one of the top sleepers in half of next year’s schedule.

Based on his three-year averages, Indy and Kansas should continue to be strongholds for the Young Gun.
