Power Ranking After Vegas

Monday, March 5, 2018

Back-to-back races on the similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks have allowed several drivers who got off to a slow start in the Daytona 500 to jump up the grid. Kevin Harvick. Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch, and Kyle Larson were among the biggest movers this week and their efforts on the more predictable tracks that are much more representative of long-term strength.

1. Ryan Blaney
Last week at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Blaney almost got the finishing result he deserved. He scored points in each segment, had the second-best average running position, and third-best Driver Rating. In the final run to the checkers, he slipped to fifth, but all those numbers combine to make him a great Fantasy NASCAR option.

2. Joey Logano
Logano showed almost as much consistency as Blaney in the Pennzoil 400, but his seventh-place finish in the race and sixth-best Driver Rating push him just a little below his teammate Blaney. With Denny Hamlin’s struggles last week, he is now the only driver with a sweep of the top 10, however, and that makes him a place-and-hold selection.

3. Kevin Harvick
If not for an accident at Daytona International Speedway in week one, Harvick would certainly be the top-ranked driver this week, but his accident there came early enough to hurt his statistics. Since then, he has been perfect on the similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks and while he doesn’t need our validation, he jumped two spots up to land third in the Fantasy Power Rankings.

4. Martin Truex Jr.
We will admit to a little surprise that Truex is not actually higher on this list by now. Like Harvick, he had a disappointing Daytona 500 and that hurt his initial stats. He also improved by two positions this week, but he’s lagging a little because he has not been as dominant as the No. 4 driver. Still, back-to-back top-fives on the similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks is enough to make him a Fantasy Stud.

5. Kurt Busch
Busch seemed genuinely baffled by his accident at Vegas. He did not think he was pushing the envelope when his car snapped around and took out both the No. 41 and No. 9 of Chase Elliott. Finishing 35th has seriously hurt his numbers and caused him to freefall down the order.

6. Denny Hamlin
Hamlin fell two spots this week, but it could have been a lot worse considering his 17th-place finish. Most of the Joe Gibbs Racing teammates struggled last week at Vegas and Hamlin was not an exception, but the team gambled and put themselves in a position to score a decent finish. His long run was mistimed slightly, however, and he had to make a late-race pit stop.

7. Brad Keselowski
Keselowski has not needed to rely on any kind of luck in the past two weeks. His second-place finish at Atlanta came after he scored top-fives in nearly all of his statistical categories. Last week’s sixth came on the heels of a sixth-place Average Running position and seventh-place Driver Rating. Consistency is important in handicapping NASCAR.

8. Kyle Busch
Busch was one of the biggest movers this week. He improved five positions over last week’s ranking of 13th because of his runner-up finish at Vegas after a strong run. Like Hamlin, he overcame disappointing preliminary sessions and a poor start position of 13th in the Pennzoil 400.

9. Aric Almirola
We expected Almirola to struggle with his new team and even after he finished in the top 15 in the first two races, he was not handicapped high at Vegas. He hovered around the front half of the pack, however, logged the 11th-best Average Running Position of 14.5, and scored his second top-10 finish of the season.

10. Kyle Larson
Larson was this week’s biggest mover, jumping six positions to 10th on the chart. He was one of the favorites to win at Vegas after running second there in 2017. His third-place finish was certainly impressive, but even better things are on the horizon when the series rolls into Auto Club Speedway in a couple of weeks.
