Summer NBA News Rundown

Wednesday, September 07, 2011

Here is an attempt to catch you up to speed on what has happened this summer. Yes, a lot of players are going overseas with an opt-out clause, but you’ll notice that most of them aren’t exactly household names. Deron Williams is an exception at this point, but has an opt-out clause, while Wilson Chandler is the biggest name to sign in China, where there are no opt-outs. Is it a gamble by Chandler? Yes, especially if the sudden influx of positive vibes about the lockout ending fairly soon carry any water.

My buddy  Mike McCollow, a former Raptors’ assistant who Wolves fans will recognize from his current gig as a television analyst, has been telling me for weeks that he thought the lockout would end relatively soon. While I still have my doubts, columns on Tuesday from Chris Sheridan and Ken Berger reiterated what McCollow has been saying.

I still think the owners are content to eat the entire season and would not be surprised if there are no games this year. But the fact several guys in the know are saying the chances of this thing ending sometime before it’s too late is at least giving all of us some hope for a fantasy season this year.

Some guys are going back to school, some are working on free throws, some are playing in exhibitions or Olympic qualifiers, and some are simply trying to stay out of jail. While I’d like to tell you that I’m certain I’ve included every guy who has made some sort of decision or news this summer, I’m pretty sure the opposite is true. In fact, if you notice someone missing, or incorrect information, feel free to drop me a line and let me know so I can correct our database.  In any case, here are 100-something news items you may have missed.

Impact League

Chauncey Billups is among more than 40 players who will participate in the "Impact Basketball Competitive Training Series" over the next two weeks. The organizers of the event are shying away from calling it a 'league' for legal reasons, but it has been informally dubbed the "Lockout League." Other NBA players planning on joining the fun include John Wall, Jermaine O'Neal, Stephen Jackson, Zach Randolph, Mo Williams, and possibly Blake Griffin. Another two-week series will be scheduled for October, assuming the lockout hasn't been resolved. And if Jermaine O’Neal makes it through both of them, I’ll be shocked.

Music

I’ve recently seen Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr, went to Bonarroo, My Morning Jacket, Guster, and am set to see Explosions In The Sky, Wild Flag, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, and Sebadoh (again) in the near future. Hope your summer is going well!
