There was plenty of action at the trade deadline, but unfortunately none of it really mattered. You’ll find a few low-end diamonds and often times the fantasy value impact can be found in the thing that ‘didn’t happen.’ Of course, this comes down to the owners rolling over the players in the last CBA negotiations, causing teams to fear the luxury tax to the point where stockpiling picks and good contracts is more important than anything else. Throw in a bunch of old contracts from the past CBA still lingering to clog up the system, and it's going to equate lameness at the deadline.
And speaking of things that didn’t happen, I’m off to go sob in a dark room while periodically throwing darts at a Utah Jazz logo.

Team: PHILADELPHIA SIXERS
Acquired: Charles Jenkins
Heading Out: Rights to Ricky Sanchez
Not Dealt: Evan Turner, Spencer Hawes
Fantasy Impacts: None. A trade wasn’t really expected so there probably wasn’t much movement on these players. Jenkins needs multiple injuries to matter and is not worth adding.
Team: CHARLOTTE BOBCATS
Acquired: Josh McRoberts
Heading Out: Hakim Warrick
Not Dealt: Gerald Henderson, Ramon Sessions, Ben Gordon
Fantasy Impacts: The backcourt logjam didn’t get solved but owners of Henderson and/or Sessions shouldn’t be too down, since Gordon might have talked his way out of playing time during the run up to the deadline. Henderson should be owned based on his overall body of work in most standard leagues, while Sessions has been coming on and I think he should also be owned, even if consistency could be an issue. It’s a good thing Byron Mullens is making the Thunder look silly for giving up on him, banging down low and putting up big numbers nightly, because McRoberts would have theoretically put owners in a tizzy had Mullens been playing the way he was before he got hurt. I wouldn’t downgrade Mullens much, if at all, and you may want to take a shot at Mullens since the natural reaction will be to think the frontcourt got more crowded. If McBob can earn minutes, they will probably come out of Bismack Biyombo’s bucket first, and there’s probably enough for each of the three to play up to their reasonable expectation. Keep an eye on McRoberts in deeper leagues, if anything because the Bobcats are so shallow.
Team: MILWAUKEE BUCKS
Acquired: J.J. Redick, Gustavo Ayon, Ishmael Smith
Heading Out: Beno Udrih, Tobias Harris, Doron Lamb
Not Dealt: Brandon Jennings, Monta Ellis, Samuel Dalembert, Ersan Ilyasova, Larry Sanders
Fantasy Impacts: The big story here is that Josh Smith was seemingly ready to land here but it didn’t happen at the last minute, as the Bucks didn’t put a big enough package to land the prize of the deadline. They also didn’t trade Ellis, who by the beginning of the day was the only Buck with major momentum for an exit. Jennings was ruled out for a trade 24-48 hours prior, and Dalembert apparently played his way into favor this past week. Ilyasova and Sanders’ names were kicked around, but they never gained any real traction.
This means the overall structure of the team remained sound, except for the fact that they added a guy in Redick who will likely play more minutes than Udrih did. On one hand, this could signify a move toward a run-and-gun lineup, but chances are the three-guard lineup will result in a small haircut for the starters and Redick will likely be a 23-27 minute guy coming off the bench. Mike Dunleavy is going to struggle to stay on the floor as much as he had, and the whole wing group will start to press up against the bigs, where minutes are already at a premium.
I wouldn’t go downgrading guys like Ilyasova, Sanders, Henson, or Dalembert in their current roles, but a few minutes here and there will be snipped from everybody. Gustavo Ayon hasn’t done enough this year to predict a major change in that regard, but he could also throw a monkey wrench in things if he has a change in performance. Hopefully for all parties, they will trend toward a faster tempo and that will be the rising tide to lift all boats (at least a little bit).
Team: CHICAGO BULLS
Not Dealt: Carlos Boozer, Richard Hamilton
Fantasy Impacts: No change whatsoever.
Team: CLEVELAND CAVALIERS
Not Dealt: Marreese Speights, Daniel Gibson, Omri Casspi
Fantasy Impacts: Gibson and Casspi weren’t going to move the needle and they were sparsely mentioned in rumors. Speights, on the other hand, wasn’t going to be helping himself by getting traded out of Cleveland’s shallow frontcourt. It would have likely signified problems if the Cavs were willing to give up on him, and now he just needs to make enough of an impact to get Bryon Scott to loosen up the minutes. I said this somewhere else this week, but I’m pretty close to cutting bait and the only thing that’s keeping me around is that lack of depth. I’m not going to pass on a hot free agent in most leagues, that’s for sure.
Team: BOSTON CELTICS
Acquired: Jordan Crawford
Heading Out: Leandro Barbosa
Not Dealt: Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Rajon Rondo, Courtney Lee, Avery Bradley, Jason Terry, Fab Melo
Fantasy Impacts: The Celtics were a prime example of all smoke and no fire, but the decision to move in on Crawford was one of necessity with Pierce and Garnett handling way too much load. Unfortunately, they created a motherload of a logjam of shooting guards playing both guard positions. How this gets moderated will be interesting to watch, and I do think the Celtics will take Crawford up on his offer to shoot anything he can get his hands on – with moderation of course. Consider this an incremental hit to each of the three incumbents, and I’d be willing to take a flier on Crawford in 14-16 team leagues if I’m in a pinch, but nothing more at this time. The addition of another scorer to help Garnett and Pierce will probably be a benefit in the long run, keeping them healthier and making them more efficient.
Team: LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS
Not Dealt: Eric Bledsoe, DeAndre Jordan, Caron Butler
Fantasy Impacts: The biggest impact is that Bledsoe isn’t going to get unleashed. He may flirt with late round value as he did earlier in the year, and get a few games to run around and do damage if Chris Paul needs a blow. Jordan could probably use a change of scenery, but it wasn’t entirely clear if a move would have helped him, so owners won’t be wringing their hands over it. A trade of Butler would have been a sneaky good benefit to the entire rotation, which is going to get a wee bit crowded as we go.
Team: MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES
Acquired: Dexter Pittman
Not Dealt: Zach Randolph
Fantasy Impacts: Nobody expected Randolph to be moved as we approached the deadline, and the Grizzlies didn’t get to use the trade exception they were talking about using. Either way, Pittman is a non-factor and Memphis moves through the deadline with no change.

Team: ATLANTA HAWKS
Acquired: Jeremy Tyler, Dahntay Jones
Heading Out: Anthony Morrow
Not Dealt: Josh Smith
Fantasy Impacts: Talk about a whirlwind couple of weeks for Smoove owners, who knew going into the deadline that the best case scenario was for him to stay in Atlanta. Now there is some concern that he’s not going to re-sign with the team and that it could put the sides in an awkward position on any disputes, but he’s going to get to chuck up all the bad shots he wants and otherwise beast across the box score at the rate he was before. Tyler is a developmental mess, but if you’re in a massive format you may want to see if the Hawks try to use him given their lack of depth. Jones could actually see some minutes at the wings, but not enough to matter and he can be left alone on the wire in reasonably sized formats. It’s also worth noting that Jeff Teague dodged the Monta Ellis bullet in a theoretic Smith to Milwaukee deal.
Team: MIAMI HEAT
Heading Out: Dexter Pittman
Fantasy Impacts: Unless your league counts flagrant fouls issued in South Beach, the Heat are what we thought they were.
Team: NEW ORLEANS HORNETS
Not Dealt: Eric Gordon
Fantasy Impacts: The idea that Gordon could be dealt for anything but an awful return was painful to watch being peddled. The Hornets will go forward with no changes in fantasy value.
Team: UTAH JAZZ
Not Dealt: Paul Millsap, Al Jefferson, Raja Bell
Fantasy Impacts: Clearly the story of the trade deadline was Bell not getting dealt, and when I say that I mean I’m doing everything I can not to throw my computer across the room. You mean to tell me that you didn’t trade ANY OF THEM?!? Yes, you can make the argument that you don’t take a bad deal just to do a deal, but at some level you’re just prolonging the inevitable. Anyway, this isn’t panic central for Derrick Favors, but I would probably cut bait with Enes Kanter if you stashed him in a 12-14 team league. My guess is that absent a playoff run, that Al Jefferson would be a shutdown risk, but to play devil’s advocate both he and Millsap will be playing for their next deals. Favors has been a low-end producer in standards, and he will naturally get minutes at the expense of the starters, and it would help if Ty Corbin got his head out of his, um, orange cone hat and stop forcing the four guys into just two buckets. Marvin Williams is not taking the team anywhere great, and while DeMarre Carroll is a nice player you gotta get your big guns on the court. This was also bad news for Gordon Hayward, who will naturally be given more responsibilities under management orders, if I’m guessing, but he isn’t going to have that spread your wings moment we were hoping for.
Team: SACRAMENTO KINGS
Not Dealt: Tyreke Evans
Fantasy Impacts: We broke down the Thomas Robinson deal six ways from Sunday, and outside of the fact that the Maloofs are threatening to for the title of worst owners in the history of pro sports, you can check out that break down. Sources told us that the Kings were open to moving Evans, but once Jason Jones broke that story the team backed off quickly. Maybe they were tired from the prior days' worth of giving away players.
Team: NEW YORK KNICKS
Acquired: Kenyon Martin (signed)
Heading Out: Ronnie Brewer
Not Dealt: Iman Shumpert
Fantasy Impacts: I’m treating Martin like a trade deadline acquisition for convenience-sake. He will add depth but owners should just watch him from the wire even in the deepest of formats. Ronnie Brewer was a non-factor, and Shumpert was never getting dealt. Not a lot to see here.
Team: LOS ANGELES LAKERS
Not Dealt: Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol, Steve Blake, Chris Duhon, Devin Ebanks, Darius Morris
Fantasy Impacts: Each of these guys had their names discussed in trade deadlines, and obviously the latter four players were deadline day deals of little to no consequence that didn’t go through. Howard was never a real threat to get traded, and Gasol lost his trade appeal with the injury. The Lakers will proceed forward with what they have, and hopefully for their fans (and fantasy owners) the death of Jerry Buss will be a coalescing moment.
Team: ORLANDO MAGIC
Acquired: Beno Udrih, Tobias Harris, Doron Lamb, Hakim Warrick
Heading Out: J.J. Redick, Gustavo Ayon, Ishmael Smith, Josh McRoberts
Fantasy Impacts: The hole left by J.J. Redick stands to get filled nicely by Beno Udrih, but he’ll struggle for consistent minutes and he’ll have to prove himself early and often to touch Redick’s workload. However, with Jameer Nelson dealing with a strained patella tendon he could be thrust into significant short-term role and it wouldn’t be all that crazy if the Magic knew what they were dealing with in Nelson when they grabbed Udrih. I’m not saying that is definitely the case, just that I wouldn’t be surprised. The Magic are also in desperate need of consistent scoring, and Udrih can do that. I’m calling him worth a speculative add in 12-team formats with plenty of risk, but also some nice upside if injury prone Nelson starts to struggle in the middle of a rebuild.
As for Harris and Lamb, Harris would be the only one worth any attention right now, and that would be limited to massive formats. Moe Harkless and Andrew Nicholson have earned the right to play heavy minutes right now, and barring a change in performance I don’t see Harris getting the jump on them anytime soon. I’d continue to hold both Harkless and Nicholson in most formats. Warrick will be waived so he’s a non-factor here, and the exit of both Ayon and McRoberts gives owners all of the aforementioned pickups some security, as does the relatively slow return of Al Harrington.
Team: DALLAS MAVERICKS
Acquired: Anthony Morrow
Heading Out: Dahntay Jones
Not Dealt: Shawn Marion, Dominique Jones, Roddy Beaubois, Brandan Wright
Fantasy Impacts: No real impacts, though it would be nice to see Morrow get off the bench and hit a few threes. I won’t be holding my breath, and owners can assess the whole situation as status quo. We know Marion is a happy man today, too (as are his owners).
Team: BROOKLYN NETS
Not Dealt: Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks
Fantasy Impacts: Talk about much to do about nothing. Neither player had much of a market and it’s because they’re just not that good in the grand scheme of things. The Nets head out of the deadline the way they came in.
Team: DENVER NUGGETS
Not Dealt: Timofey Mozgov, Andre Miller
Fantasy Impacts: Everything stays the same in Denver, though it was interesting to see Mozgov gather the attention he did. Miller gripes about his playing time all the time, but he’s more valuable to the Nuggets at this stage of his career than he would be to most teams.
Team: INDIANA PACERS
Not Dealt: Danny Granger, Gerald Green, D.J. Augustin, Tyler Hansbrough
Fantasy Impacts: None of these guys gathered much interest or had any real chance of being dealt, so one of the league’s most predictable fantasy squads remains exactly that.
Team: DETROIT PISTONS
Not Dealt: Charlie Villanueva, Jason Maxiell, Jonas Jerebko, Will Bynum
Fantasy Impacts: Like the rest of these teams that didn’t make moves, their fantasy situation remains the same. Chris Sheridan called Bynum the most likely player to be dealt this year (and called Dwight Howard 50/50 to go to the Nets, among other swings and misses), so it was kind of funny to see him not get his No. 1 prediction right.
Team: TORONTO RAPTORS
Acquired: Sebastian Telfair
Heading Out: Hamed Haddadi
Not Dealt: Andrea Bargnani, Alan Anderson, Linas Kleiza
Fantasy Impacts: Anderson and Kleiza only had mild rumors attached to them, but the Telfair situation nearly piqued my interest as much as Bargnani’s plummeting value. The Raptors went out and signed John Lucas this summer and seemed pretty happy about it, and the Raps were hell-bent on getting a backup PG during this deadline. Anyway, it’s not that important as neither of those backup guards will have any fantasy value, and it’s not looking great for Bargnani, either. Yes, Bargnani could get back on track with the pressure and embarrassment of the trade deadline fading, or his elbow and overall conditioning could get back on track. Still, the Raptors basically misplayed this hand and went into a lateral spin, ending up with nothing. I wouldn’t stash Bargs for more than another week, and I’m not exactly falling all over myself to do that. The larger concern is for guys like Amir Johnson and Jonas Valanciunas, who were about to potentially luck into vats of playing time. I still think they get all the run they can handle, fouling issues aside (JV), so hang on to both of them and see where this goes, even if JV is not necessarily a must-own player in standards.
Team: HOUSTON ROCKETS
Not Dealt: Omer Asik, Chandler Parsons
Fantasy Impacts: Asik and Parsons were late entrants to the rumor mill in a theoretic Josh Smith trade, but that talk quickly faded and it’s anybody’s guess if there was a real chance that it had legs. We covered the Thomas Robinson trade in detail, and the only new news in the last 24 hours was the team’s apparent interest in Terrence Jones, if you’re buying Steve Kyler’s report that is. The good news is that nothing changed in Houston, where fantasy titles are being won.
Team: SAN ANTONIO SPURS
Not Dealt: DeJuan Blair
Fantasy Impacts: It wasn’t for a lack of trying, but like most teams today the Spurs couldn’t find a taker. It’s same old, same old in San Antonio.
Team: PHOENIX SUNS
Acquired: Hamed Haddadi
Heading Out: Sebastian Telfair
Not Dealt: Marcin Gortat, Jared Dudley, Jermaine O’Neal, Markieff Morris
Fantasy Impacts: A runner up in the smoke to fire ratio contest, and not in the right way, the only thing they did was remove their backup PG from the equation. A trade of O’Neal would have helped Gortat, but it’s still possible he gets released to go play for a contender. Click the link above for the Thomas Robinson trade to get a breakdown of the new developments, and hope if you own Suns players that they continue to run the offense through Goran Dragic.
Team: OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
Acquired: Ronnie Brewer, Giorgos Printezis
Not Dealt: Kendrick Perkins
Fantasy Impacts: Brewer is there to be depth on the bench and that is it. Printezis has a long ways to go before we’re memorizing how to spell his name. Perkins’ name was floated a whole bunch but never in a deal that had a chance, but it would be interesting to know if the Thunder finally realize that they’ve got a declining asset. Either way, no changes in OKC.
Team: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES
Not Dealt: Luke Ridnour, J.J. Barea, Brandon Roy, Derrick Williams, Nikola Pekovic
Fantasy Impacts: The fact Ridnour didn’t get dealt was high up on the list of surprises, and with Minnesota rattling their sabers so much it was a shock they didn’t do anything at all. It probably speaks to the cold market more than anything, but this indicates the Wolves are going to try to match a deal on Pekovic this summer. This was also bad news for owners stashing Alexey Shved, as not only did he not get any relief he’ll have Chase Budinger returning at some point. I still think he has a shot at value playing amongst injury prone veterans, but he’s not a must-own/stash guy until you get to the 14-16 team range. Just be ready to move if the Wolves decide it’s time to do the Ricky Rubio/Shved backcourt.
Team: PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS
Acquired: Eric Maynor
Heading Out: Ronnie Price
Not Dealt: J.J. Hickson
Fantasy Impacts: I think everybody needs to take a step back and stop showering Maynor with unwavering praise, as he had one good year and hasn’t shown anything since. He lost his job to Reggie Jackson and it’s possible his knee hasn’t come all the way back, or that his rhythm was impacted. After that spectacular intro, however, let me say I’ll be watching him pretty closely in his first few games, especially if Wesley Matthews (ankle, elbow) can’t stay on the court. Matthews is a known warrior, but the Blazers are paper-thin and could use anybody to step up and give them something. I don’t know if Maynor can be that guy, but like I said, I’ll be watching.
Team: GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS
Heading Out: Charles Jenkins, Jeremy Tyler
Not Dealt: Klay Thompson
Fantasy Impacts: I had a hard time listing Thompson as a guy whose future was in question, but with bozos deciding to report an Eric Gordon deal as an actual thing I will begrudgingly do it. The Warriors made a few deals to get under the cap, and they go into the stretch run with no added reinforcements. Again, it was probably more the marketplace than anything, but a tough, cheap big down low would have been perfect.
Team: WASHINGTON WIZARDS
Acquired: Leandro Barbosa, Jason Collins
Heading Out: Jordan Crawford
Fantasy Impacts: I dropped Bradley Beal in one league and I want to punch myself, though nobody could have known that Crawford would have put his career into a blender so fast. Now with Crawford all-the-way gone, Beal is a must-own and must-start player until further notice. This also improves things for Martell Webster, Trevor Ariza, and even John Wall, as nobody has to worry about Crawford stealing minutes and jacking up ridiculous shots. And if you haven’t noticed, the Wizards are winning more often, and it’s not all because Wall is back. Score one for basketball IQ!
