FanDuel NBA Pivots: Wednesday

Wednesday, January 10, 2018

The purpose of this article is to outline potential popular selections at every position, then give some sneaky pivot plays with lower ownership rates for tournament consideration. Essentially, it’s your traditional “Tournament Picks” segment with an emphasis on getting away from those groupthink selections of the day.

In other words, I’m playing devil’s advocate in going against the grain. Hopefully, this will help find some lower-owned pivot plays to accompany the popular, well-aligned picks in your FanDuel lineups.

Keep in mind that this article was constructed early in the day. Opportunities may come and go based on injury situations, so keep an eye on all the breaking news with Rotoworld’s NBA Headlines Feed.

We are focusing on the main slate starting at 7:00 ET.

POINT GUARD

Popular Picks: Shabazz Napier (if Lillard out), Goran Dragic, Rajon Rondo, Russell Westbrook

Pivot: Jawun Evans – LA Clippers (FanDuel Price: $4,700)

There’s an injury situation to monitor here, as Austin Rivers will continue to miss time and Milos Teodosic is questionable. If Teodosic misses his third straight game, Jawun Evans could see plenty of minutes in the shorthanded Clippers’ backcourt. That was the case in the past two games, where Evans racked up 73 fantasy points in 66 minutes combined. There’s some blowout risk at Golden State tonight (Warriors favored by 16), but garbage time could actually help Evans’ cause.

If Teodosic is ruled out, don’t forget about SG C.J. Williams ($4400) as well. There’s more risk in his fantasy profile, but he tallied 39 FP in 37 minutes Monday vs Atlanta with LAC shorthanded.

SHOOTING GUARD

Popular Picks: Tyreke Evans, Jrue Holiday, Avery Bradley, CJ McCollum (if Lillard out)

Pivot: Khris Middleton – Milwaukee (FanDuel Price: $8,000)

Tyreke Evans, Jrue Holiday, CJ McCollum, and maybe even Bradley Beal or Lou Williams will make the public’s short-list of shooting guards. In other words, Khris Middleton will likely slip through the cracks with a lower-than-deserved ownership rate. That comes despite a keen matchup against an Orlando team that ranks dead last in defensive efficiency vs shooting guards. Middleton has been somewhat mediocre lately, but he has legitimate 45-50 FP upside, and this is a promising landing spot.

SMALL FORWARD

Popular Picks: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Josh Richardson, E’Twaun Moore, Joe Harris

Pivot: Gerald Green – Houston (FanDuel Price: $4,500)

Green posted some impressive fantasy performances (36 FP @ORL, 36 FP vs GS) last week. He continues to see around 27-30 minutes with James Harden out of the lineup, but Green has cooled off over the past few games (19 & 25 FP respectively). Most DFS enthusiasts have probably soured on him because of that. Also, there seems to be a logjam of value at small forward on FanDuel – Moore, Harris, W.Johnson, Richardson, etc. Green has the ability to post better per-dollar upside than any of those players, but his scoring-dependent fantasy profile has plenty of risk attached to it.

POWER FORWARD

Popular Picks: Bobby Portis, Domantas Sabonis, Kristaps Porzingis

Pivot: Tobias Harris – Detroit (FanDuel Price: $6,700)

Bobby Portis and Domantas Sabonis will pull a ton of ownership at power forward. On any other slate, Tobias Harris would be a hot commodity, but he’s taking a backseat to that value pairing tonight. Don’t forget about Tobias, who has posted back-to-back 41+ FP performances. The matchup is excellent against a fast-paced Brooklyn team that ranks 24th vs opposing power forwards.

CENTER

Popular Picks: DeMarcus Cousins, Andre Drummond, Nikola Jokic, Bam Adebayo

Pivot: Kyle O’Quinn – New York (FanDuel Price: $4,600)

O’Quinn is a volatile DFS option, as his recent game log accurately portrays. However, there’s an opportunity for KOQ to post strong upside if Michael Beasley (questionable) is out. That was the case last game and O’Quinn posted 38 FP in 22 minutes. He’ll fall back on a higher usage rate if Beasley sits again, and his opponent (Chicago) ranks 22nd in rebound rate.
