This has been a crazy first week of NFL action. So far 12 non-quarterbacks have scored multiple touchdowns and three of those were in one game, from one team! So let’s start off our list of Weekend Winners with the founder of that touchdown feast.
Yes, Peyton Manning threw for seven touchdowns. That hasn’t been done since Joe Kapp did it for Minnesota against Baltimore in 1969. And ol’ Kapp only threw for 40 in his career!
Manning tossed 42 passes completing 27 of them for 462 yards and no interceptions. That makes him only the second quarterback to ever throw 7 touchdowns without throwing an interception. The great Y.A. Tittle is the other. That's some nice company to keep. And just for fun, Manning's statistical pace for the season is to throw for 7,392 yards, 112 touchdowns and zero interceptions. Looks like it’s all-down hill from here.
All of those touchdowns and yards also made weekend winners out of Demaryius Thomas, Wes Welker and Julius Thomas all who caught two touchdowns from Manning. When you put up big numbers like that, you’re usually not sharing the statistical spotlight with so many of your teammates!
Colin Kaepernick put together one of his best games ever against the Packers at home on Sunday passing for his first regular season 300+ yard game and also his first 400+ game as he finished with 412 yards on 27-of-39 passing for 3 touchdowns.
Anquan Boldin was the recipient of 17 of those targets catching 13 for 208 yards and a touchdown. So it looks like his debut as a 49er went pretty well. He’s the only receiver with two 200+ receiving yard games on opening day. His first time was his rookie season with Arizona almost 10 years to the day.
Tight end Vernon Davis was also on the receiving end of Colin Kaepernick’s big day catching 6 of 9 targets for 98 yards and two touchdowns. Those 9 targets are more than any game he had last season. This should be a big year for him.
Victor Cruz started the season off right with a huge game in Texas (I hear things are slightly larger down there). He caught 5 of 8 targets for 118 yards and three touchdowns. The last player to catch three touchdowns on opening day? His teammate Hakeem Nicks in 2010.
The 2012 offensive MVP Adrian Peterson picked up where he left off taking his first carry 78 yards for a touchdown. He finished the game with 111 total yards and three touchdowns. It looks like this guy is no fluke.
A.J. Green showed everyone that he needs to be considered as Calvin Johnson's running mate in the best wide receiver in the NFL competition with his performance Sunday. He went into Chicago and took on a tough secondary and player in Peanut Tillman and dominated. He caught 9 of 13 targets for 162 yards and 2 touchdowns while everyone in the stadium knew where the ball was going.
Reggie Bush started his tenure with the Detroit Lions with a bang, rushing 21 times for 90 yards and catching 4 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. I think he’ll like the wide-open attack of the Lions.
We’ve been looking at tight end Jared Cook’s potential for a while now, but he’s finally living up to it now that he’s out of Tennessee and in St. Louis. He started the game early with a long would-be touchdown reception but was stripped by Tyrann Mathieu (of Honey Badger fame) at the goal line. But that auspicious start wouldn’t deter him as he went on to catch 7 of 10 targets for 141 yards and two touchdowns.
Last season Larry Fitzgerald couldn’t buy a decent pass from his quadruple group of lackluster quarterbacks. So far this season his new quarterback Carson Palmer has been on point. Fitzgerald caught 8 passes from him for 80 yards and two touchdowns in the opener in St. Louis. In all of last year he caught a total of 4 touchdowns. He may get more this year.
