Week 13 Target Watch: AFC

Friday, November 29, 2013

Welcome to the AFC targets and touches for Week 13 of the NFL season. The NFC portion can be found with a click of the clicky thing.

I have all the targets for each player since Week 8, and then in parentheses are the total and then average targets per game played for that player. Then below that I have the Red Zone targets and touches for each player, now sorted for rushing attempts and passing targets from Week 8 on.  I hope you enjoy and if you get a chance give a follow on Twitter.

Editor's Note: Rotoworld's partner FanDuel is hosting a one-week $300,000 Fantasy Football league for Week 13. It's $25 to join and first prize is $25,000. Starts Sunday at 1pm ET. Here's the link.

Baltimore Ravens

Torrey Smith: BYE-8-14-8-4 (34) (8.5), Jacoby Jones: BYE-8-2-2-6 (18) (4.5), Ray Rice: BYE-4-6-5-1 (16) (4), Ed Dickson: BYE-3-4-3-5 (15) (3.8), Marlon Brown: BYE-9-3-dnp-2 (14) (4.7), Dallas Clark: BYE-1-2-4-4 (11) (2.8), Tandon Doss: BYE-4-1-5-1 (11) (2.8), Deonte Thompson: BYE-4-1-3-dnp (8) (2.7), Bernard Pierce: BYE-0-3-0-0 (3) (0.8), Vonta Leach: BYE-0-0-1-2 (3) (0.8), Brandon Stokley: BYE-dnp-dnp-dnp-1 (1) (1)

Jacoby Jones led the way in this one with five targets in which he caught four for 103 yards and a touchdown. The targets were spread out and the defense dominated, so the offense wasn’t asked to do much.

The run game continues to be non-existent with Ray Rice rushing 16 times for 30 yards and Bernard Pierce with 10 carries for 30 yards. The Jets run defense is one of the best in the league, but it’s looking like Ray Rice’s game against Chicago was mostly due to how bad Chicago is at stopping the run.

Red Zone Targets+Touches: Torrey Smith: Run 0/Tar 8, Marlon Brown: Run 0/Tar 3, Dallas Clark: Run 0/Tar 3, Jacoby Jones: Run 0/Tar 1, Deonte Thompson: Run 0/Tar 1, Ray Rice: Run 12/Tar 1, Joe Flacco: Run 0/Tar 0, Vonta Leach: Run 2/Tar 0

Buffalo Bills

Steve Johnson: 11-7-10-dnp-BYE (28) (9.3), Scott Chandler: 11-9-3-3-BYE (26) (6.5), Marquise Goodwin: 5-4-4-9-BYE (22) (5.5), T.J. Graham: 4-4-4-4-BYE (16) (4), Fred Jackson: 4-2-4-2-BYE (12) (3), Robert Woods: 3-8-dnp-dnp-BYE (11) (5.5), C.J. Spiller: dnp-3-3-2-BYE (8) (2.7), Chris Gragg: 0-0-6-0-BYE (6) (1.5), Chris Hogan: 0-0-1-4-BYE (5) (1.2), Lee Smith: 0-0-1-2-BYE (3) (0.8), Marcus Easley: 0-1-2-0-BYE (3) (0.8), Frank Summers: 1-0-0-1-BYE (2) (0.5), Tashard Choice: 0-1-0-1-BYE (2) (0.5)

With Stevie Johnson and Robert Woods out for this game it was the Marquise Goodwin show and he didn’t disappoint catching six of nine targets for 81 yards and a touchdown. His nine targets were much more than the #2 receivers Chris Hogan and T.J. Graham who had four each. Graham made the most of his with two receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown.

The Jets’ rush defense is stout and it showed as C.J. Spiller ran 13 times for six yards and Fred Jackson rushed 12 times for 34 yards. Last season Spiller averaged 3.6 yards after contact and this season he’s averaging 1.8. He’s not the same player.

Red Zone Targets+Touches: Steve Johnson: Run 1/Tar 5, Scott Chandler: Run 0/Tar 3, Robert Woods: Run 0/Tar 2, T.J. Graham: Run 0/Tar 2, Fred Jackson: Run 15/Tar 2, C.J. Spiller: Run 2/Tar 2, Marquise Goodwin: Run 0/Tar 1, Marcus Easley: Run 0/Tar 1, Chris Gragg: Run 0/Tar 1, Tashard Choice: Run 6/Tar 1, EJ Manuel: Run 1/Tar 0, Thaddeus Lewis: Run 3/Tar 0, Frank Summers: Run 1/Tar 0

Cincinnati Bengals

A.J. Green: 7-19-15-5-BYE (46) (11.5), Mohamed Sanu: 3-9-8-5-BYE (25) (6.2), Marvin Jones: 8-7-7-2-BYE (24) (6), Tyler Eifert: 4-4-10-1-BYE (19) (4.8), Giovani Bernard: 2-4-8-5-BYE (19) (4.8), Jermaine Gresham: 3-7-dnp-6-BYE (16) (5.3), Andrew Hawkins: dnp-2-0-2-BYE (4) (1.3), Alex Smith: 0-0-2-1-BYE (3) (0.8), Dane Sanzenbacher: 2-1-0-0-BYE (3) (0.8), Brandon Tate: 1-0-0-0-BYE (1) (0.2)

Andy Dalton completed 13-of-27 passes (48%) for 93 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. I doubt you can find too many three-touchdown games from quarterbacks who only score 11 fantasy points in standard format. His 93 yards are a record low for a player who attempted at least 25 passes and threw three touchdowns in the same game.  Mohammed Sanu threw for 25 yards on one attempt; over a fourth of the yardage Dalton could muster.

Giovani Bernard had 30 snaps to BenJarvus Green-Ellis’ 23, but had 14 touches to Green-Ellis’ 16. Bernard outplayed him again though with 86 total yards to his 62.

Red Zone Targets+Touches: Marvin Jones: Run 0/Tar 7, Giovani Bernard: Run 7/Tar 6, A.J. Green: Run 0/Tar 4, Mohamed Sanu: Run 0/Tar 4, Tyler Eifert: Run 0/Tar 3, Jermaine Gresham: Run 0/Tar 1, Alex Smith: Run 0/Tar 1, BenJarvus Green-Ellis: Run 4/Tar 0

Cleveland Browns

Josh Gordon: 10-7-BYE-15-17 (49) (12.2), Chris Ogbonnaya: 4-6-BYE-12-5 (27) (6.8), Jordan Cameron: 4-5-BYE-7-10 (26) (6.5), Davone Bess: 8-4-BYE-6-8 (26) (6.5), Greg Little: 3-9-BYE-6-7 (25) (6.2), Fozzy Whittaker: 2-4-BYE-5-5 (16) (4), Willis McGahee: 2-0-BYE-2-0 (4) (1), Gary Barnidge: 1-1-BYE-1-0 (3) (0.8), MarQueis Gray: 1-0-BYE-dnp-dnp (1) (0.5), Armanti Edwards: dnp-1-BYE-0-dnp (1) (0.5)

The Browns were never really in this game, but Josh Gordon led the league in points as he caught 14 of 17 passes for 237 yards and a touchdown. It was done in garbage time, but still was an amazing display of offense.

Jordan Cameron has hit a big slump that we have been blaming on their poor quarterback play, which they for sure have had, but in this game he caught just three of 10 targets for 32 yards and two drops.

Red Zone Targets+Touches: Josh Gordon: Run 0/Tar 7, Chris Ogbonnaya: Run 0/Tar 4, Greg Little: Run 0/Tar 3, Davone Bess: Run 0/Tar 2, Jordan Cameron: Run 0/Tar 2, Fozzy Whittaker: Run 1/Tar 1, Gary Barnidge: Run 0/Tar 1, Armanti Edwards: Run 1/Tar 0, Willis McGahee: Run 9/Tar 0

Denver Broncos

Demaryius Thomas: 11-BYE-10-13-9 (43) (10.8), Wes Welker: 10-BYE-6-10-8 (34) (8.5), Eric Decker: 7-BYE-5-6-4 (22) (5.5), Knowshon Moreno: 6-BYE-8-1-1 (16) (4), Julius Thomas: 3-BYE-5-5-dnp (13) (4.3), Montee Ball: 1-BYE-0-4-3 (8) (2), Jacob Tamme: 1-BYE-0-0-5 (6) (1.5), Andre Caldwell: 2-BYE-1-1-0 (4) (1), Virgil Green: 1-BYE-1-0-2 (4) (1), Joel Dreessen: 2-BYE-0-0-1 (3) (0.8), C.J. Anderson: 0-BYE-0-0-1 (1) (0.2)

The Broncos’ passing game had a tough time dealing with the cold and windy conditions in this one. Peyton Manning didn’t test the elements that often downfield with just 10 passes over 10 yards, completing just four, but he wasn’t helped by his teammates who dropped five passes.

Knowshon Moreno was the star for the Broncos as he rushed 37 times for 224 yards and a touchdown. Those 37 attempts are the most by a running back since the 2008 season. That huge usage ended up hurting Moreno, so might not have been the best idea in hindsight, but it was a great performance.

Red Zone Targets+Touches: Demaryius Thomas: Run 0/Tar 7, Wes Welker: Run 0/Tar 3, Joel Dreessen: Run 0/Tar 2, Virgil Green: Run 0/Tar 2, Montee Ball: Run 8/Tar 2, Jacob Tamme: Run 0/Tar 1, Eric Decker: Run 0/Tar 1, Julius Thomas: Run 0/Tar 1, Knowshon Moreno: Run 9/Tar 1

Houston Texans

Andre Johnson: BYE-13-12-17-6 (48) (12), Garrett Graham: BYE-6-3-13-9 (31) (7.8), DeAndre Hopkins: BYE-6-11-2-4 (23) (5.8), Ben Tate: BYE-2-5-6-6 (19) (4.8), DeVier Posey: BYE-4-6-4-1 (15) (3.8), Keshawn Martin: BYE-0-0-5-2 (7) (1.8), Greg Jones: BYE-1-1-1-0 (3) (0.8), Dennis Johnson: BYE-0-1-0-2 (3) (0.8), Ryan Griffin: BYE-0-1-dnp-2 (3) (1), Arian Foster: BYE-1-dnp-dnp-dnp (1) (1), Lestar Jean: BYE-0-1-0-0 (1) (0.2)

I stand by my belief that Case Keenum shouldn’t have been pulled the week before, but there is no doubt he’s lost his luster after a hot start. He finished the day completing just 18-of-34 for 169 yards and an interception.

Dennis Johnson saw more looks than Ben Tate in the second half after outplaying him in the running game. Tate finished with seven carries for one yard while Johnson had 13 carries for 74 yards. I don’t think this is a complete changing of the guard, but the situation will probably be of the hot-hand variety going forward.

Red Zone Targets+Touches: Andre Johnson: Run 0/Tar 6, Ben Tate: Run 9/Tar 3, DeAndre Hopkins: Run 0/Tar 2, Ryan Griffin: Run 0/Tar 1, DeVier Posey: Run 0/Tar 1, Keshawn Martin: Run 0/Tar 1, Garrett Graham: Run 0/Tar 1, Dennis Johnson: Run 2/Tar 0, Case Keenum: Run 1/Tar 0,

Indianapolis Colts

T.Y. Hilton: BYE-12-8-9-9 (38) (9.5), Coby Fleener: BYE-5-10-10-8 (33) (8.2), Darrius Heyward-Bey: BYE-6-6-3-6 (21) (5.2), Griff Whalen: BYE-9-5-3-dnp (17) (5.7), Trent Richardson: BYE-3-5-5-2 (15) (3.8), LaVon Brazill: BYE-2-5-1-5 (13) (3.2), Donald Brown: BYE-2-5-1-2 (10) (2.5), Stanley Havili: BYE-1-4-1-dnp (6) (2), Weslye Saunders: BYE-dnp-dnp-3-2 (5) (2.5), David Reed: BYE-0-1-0-2 (3) (0.8), Daniel Herron: BYE-dnp-1-0-0 (1) (0.3), Justice Cunningham: BYE-dnp-dnp-dnp-1 (1) (1)

Andrew Luck hasn’t been playing well of late and this game was no exception as he completed 20-0f-39 for 163 yards, one touchdown and one interception that was returned for a touchdown.

T.Y. Hilton and Coby Fleener led with nine and eight targets while Fleener converted the only touchdown. They weren’t able to do much, but we can be sure they are the two players worth owning in fantasy at the moment for the Colts.

The Colts played from behind in this one, but Trent Richardson led the way with 40 snaps to Donald Brown’s 16. This is curious after Brown has been outplaying Richardson and seeing most of the work in come from behind mode. Richardson wasn’t successful so Brown still should be in the picture in what looks to be an extremely fluid backfield rotation.

Red Zone Targets+Touches: T.Y. Hilton: Run 0/Tar 8, Darrius Heyward-Bey: Run 0/Tar 6, Griff Whalen: Run 0/Tar 4, LaVon Brazill: Run 0/Tar 4, Donald Brown: Run 4/Tar 3, Coby Fleener: Run 0/Tar 3, Stanley Havili: Run 0/Tar 1, David Reed: Run 0/Tar 1, Trent Richardson: Run 2/Tar 0, Daniel Herron: Run 1/Tar 0, Andrew Luck: Run 3/Tar 0
