Live Blog: 12-Team PPR Draft

Monday, August 8, 2016

The third-annual APEX Industry Draft began on Friday morning. This is a 12-team PPR league where we start one quarterback, two running backs, three wide receivers, one tight end, one flex (RB/WR/TE), one defense, and one kicker. Here's a link to the official scoring of APEX fantasy leagues. With an ability to start four wideouts and PPR scoring, the league format is highly conducive to a Zero RB approach, which many past owners in this league have taken and more will inevitably take this year.

I thought Rotoworld readers might enjoy it if I used this page to live blog the draft. I'll post each pick and offer up some commentary on the first eight rounds of this 18-round draft. Here's a link to the full draft page.

First Round

1.01. Shawn Siegele -- Antonio Brown (WR1)
1.02. Chet Gresham -- Julio Jones (WR2)
1.03. Evan Silva -- Odell Beckham (WR3)
1.04. Matt Harmon -- A.J. Green (WR4)
1.05. JJ Zachariason -- Dez Bryant (WR5)
1.06. Matt Kelley -- Allen Robinson (WR6)
1.07. Graham Barfield -- DeAndre Hopkins (WR7)
1.08. Mike Clay -- David Johnson (RB1)
1.09. Mike Braude -- Keenan Allen (WR8)
1.10. Denny Carter -- Mike Evans (WR9)
1.11. Sigmund Bloom -- Todd Gurley (RB2)
1.12. Rich Hribar -- Ezekiel Elliott (RB3)

Comments: Not surprisingly, we see nine receivers and only three running backs go off the board in round one. I'm anticipating a similar theme in round two and am very interested to see just how far the usual second-round backs last. Brown, Jones, and Beckham are locked in as this year's top-three fantasy picks. Debates begin in earnest at 1.04, where I agree with Harmon that Green is the best and highest-ceiling remaining bet. In my opinion, the lone first-round "surprise" was Evans going off the board at 1.10. The WR22 in this format last year, Evans was drafted by Carter as this year's WR9. Although Evans' catch (74) and yardage (1,206) totals improved from his rookie season, he scored only three TDs for a measly 4.1% touchdown rate after posting TD rates of 17.6% in his first NFL season and 17.4% as a sophomore in the SEC. Evans is a green-light candidate for major touchdown-scoring progression.

Second Round

2.01. Rich Hribar -- Alshon Jeffery (WR10)
2.02. Sigmund Bloom -- T.Y. Hilton (WR11)
2.03. Denny Carter -- Brandon Marshall (WR12)
2.04. Mike Braude -- Rob Gronkowski (TE1)
2.05. Mike Clay -- Adrian Peterson (RB4)
2.06. Graham Barfield -- Jordy Nelson (WR13)
2.07. Matt Kelley -- Brandin Cooks (WR14)
2.08. JJ Zachariason -- Lamar Miller (RB5)
2.09. Matt Harmon -- Jamaal Charles (RB6)
2.10. Evan Silva -- Devonta Freeman (RB7)
2.11. Chet Gresham -- LeSean McCoy (RB8)
2.12. Shawn Siegele -- Amari Cooper (WR15)

Comments: Through two rounds, Clay was the only drafter to start RB-RB in what's essentially a start-four-WR league. I'll be watching to see whether Clay switches gears and begins aggressively drafting wide receivers for the next several rounds or employs a Robust RB approach, filling out his flex spot with another running back. Although they are fragile investments, running backs will theoretically be the best "values" in this draft with so many owners going Zero RB or wide receiver heavy. My sense is Clay will trust his projections and keep trying to collect value. Four owners started WR-WR: Siegele, Kelley, Barfield, and Carter. Four owners started WR-RB: Gresham, Harmon, Zachariason, and I. Bloom and Hribar started RB-WR. Braude plucked Gronk at 2.04, starting WR-TE. Braude always goes Zero RB in these leagues and I suspect we'll see him make several receiver picks in a row from this point on. Braude finished first in the 2014 regular season in this league and came in second in 2015. (You can view last year's results at this link.)

Third Round

3.01. Shawn Siegele -- Sammy Watkins (WR16)
3.02. Chet Gresham -- C.J. Anderson (RB9)
3.03. Evan Silva -- Golden Tate (WR17)
3.04. Matt Harmon -- Randall Cobb (WR18)
3.05. JJ Zachariason -- Donte Moncrief (WR19)
3.06. Matt Kelley -- Julian Edelman (WR20)
3.07. Graham Barfield -- Demaryius Thomas (WR21)
3.08. Mike Clay -- Le'Veon Bell (RB10)
3.09. Mike Braude -- Jarvis Landry (WR22)
3.10. Denny Carter -- Jeremy Maclin (WR23)
3.11. Sigmund Bloom -- Mark Ingram (RB11)
3.12. Rich Hribar -- Michael Floyd (WR24)

Comments: All four owners who started WR-WR followed up with a third wide receiver in round three. Clay has begun RB-RB-RB, giving him a potentially lethal trio of David Johnson, Adrian Peterson, and Le'Veon Bell. Will he reach a round or two to pair Bell with DeAngelo Williams? And will Clay be able to cobble together a respectable wide receiver lineup? Having begun Dez Bryant-Lamar Miller-Donte Moncrief, 2015 league winner Zachariason appears to have one of the highest-upside rosters so far, particularly in terms of touchdown scoring. My top-three picks, Odell Beckham, Devonta Freeman, and Golden Tate, combined for 259 receptions last season. My third-round decision came down to Tate, Cobb, and Moncrief. I think Tate has the highest floor of those three in this format, and underrated upside following Megatron's retirement. After locking in Julio Jones at 1.02, Gresham followed up with back-to-back running back picks (LeSean McCoy, C.J. Anderson). Harmon is taking the same approach as me in terms of position allocation, starting off WR-RB-WR (A.J. Green, Jamaal Charles, Randall Cobb.) Do not be surprised if 3-WR starters Barfield, Carter, Siegele, and Kelley select wide receivers in round four, as well.
