What is the best way for a Canadian city to get a franchise in the NHL?
Answer: Let the NHL award a team to Atlanta, wait 8-10 years and voila!! The franchise will make its way to Canada. It happened in 1980 when the Flames moved from Atlanta to Calgary and the rumor mill is now a buzz with the possibility of the Thrashers headed to Quebec City or even Winnipeg.
The races for both the Eastern and Western Conference playoffs are really heating up and the remainder of the regular season should be outstanding.

ANAHEIMGames this weekvs. New York Rangers, @ Colorado, vs. Phoenix
NotesBrad Winchester made his Ducks debut on Wednesday and saw some action on the first line with
Corey Perry and
Ryan Getzlaf. The Ducks are using
Dan Ellis and
Ray Emery in goal as
Jonas Hiller is still suffering from the effects of vertigo and doctors are unsure as to its source.
Todd Marchant scored on Monday for the first time in 70 games.
ATLANTAGames this week@ Carolina, vs. New Jersey, @ Philadelphia
NotesThe Thrashers play three games in four nights so expect
Ondrej Pavelec (if healthy) and
Chris Mason to each see action this week. Atlanta are a tired team on Saturday when they are playing a rested Flyer squad as the Thrashers play the Devils on Friday.
Nik Antropov is not having a good season with only 11 goals and 30 points in 58 games and only four goals since the start of the new year. The Thrashers added
Radek Dvorak and
Rob Schremp at the deadline.
BOSTONGames this week@ Montreal, vs. Buffalo, @ New York Islanders
NotesThe Bruins play three games in four nights this week so look for
Tuukka Rask to play at least once in place of
Tim Thomas. Rask has been outstanding of late winning his last four games while giving up only seven goals in 121 shots. The Bruins will be tired on Friday when they are on Long Island as they play the Sabres at home on Thursday. GM Peter Chiarelli would love to sign unrestricted free agent to be
Tomas Kaberle at the end of the season.
Nathan Horton has four goals and an assist in his last five games.
Tyler Seguin is still a project for the Bruins and has been a healthy scratch three times in the last 11 games.
BUFFALOGames this week@ Pittsburgh, @ Boston, @ Toronto, vs. Ottawa
NotesThe Sabres play their first three on the road this week to finish up a seven game road trip and play three games in four nights this week as well. Do not be surprised if
Jhonas Enroth gets recalled once again to play in place of
Ryan Miller as Buffalo does not seem to trust
Patrick Lalime in the net. The Sabres are tired on Sunday when they play at home for the first time in two weeks against the Senators after playing in Toronto Saturday night. Buffalo picked up
Brad Boyes and he scored a goal in his first game in a Sabres uniform.
CALGARYGames this week@ Dallas, @ Phoenix, vs. Vancouver
NotesThe Flames play three games in four nights so expect to see
Henrik Karlsson once in goal in place of
Miikka Kiprusoff. The Flames will be tired on Thursday when they are in Phoenix after playing in Dallas on Wednesday. Kiprusoff had two shutouts in a row and three in five games before he was chased from the net on Wednesday after giving up four goals on 19 shots in the first two periods. The Flames picked up
Fredrik Modin in a trade with Atlanta and claimed
Brett Carson off waivers.
CAROLINAGames this weekvs. Atlanta, @ Washington, vs. Columbus
NotesThe Hurricanes play three times in four nights so we could see
Justin Peters replace
Cam Ward in a game. Ward has played in 23 straight games.
Eric Staal is back after missing one game with an upper body injury. The Hurricanes picked up
Bryan Allen on trade deadline day. Carolina has moved up to seventh in the East entering action on Friday.
CHICAGOGames this week@ Florida, @ Tampa Bay, @ Washington
NotesThe Blackhawks play all three games on the road this week. They will be a tired team on Wednesday when they take on the Lightning in Tampa Bay after playing the Panthers across the state the previous night.
Michael Frolik picked up his first points for the Blackhawks in his 10th game with the team on Wednesday and it was also his first goal in 32 games. The Blackhawks picked up
Chris Campoli at the trade deadline, a good depth move considering they lost
Jordan Hendry for six months the night before.
COLORADOGames this week@ Minnesota, vs. Anaheim, @ Nashville
NotesThe Avalanche are tired on Saturday and playing a rested Nashville team after the Avs are home to Anaheim on Friday night. Colorado did not do a lot on trade deadline day but did acquire
Shawn Belle from the Oilers.
Matt Duchene has only three goals and six points in his last 19 games.
David Jones has four goals in his last six games.
COLUMBUSGames this week@ St. Louis, vs. St. Louis, vs. Los Angeles, @ Carolina
NotesThe Blue Jackets play all three games in four nights, so look for
Mathieu Garon to play once in place of
Steve Mason. The Blue Jackets play a home-and-home series against the Blues so look for
Jared Boll and
Derek Dorsett to add to their penalty minute totals. Columbus was busy on trade deadline day acquiring
Scottie Upshall,
Sami Lepisto,
Michael Chaput,
Greg Moore and
Petr Kalus, who was actually acquired after the trade deadline and as a result will be ineligible to play in the NHL the rest of the season.
Matt Calvert scored five goals and six points in three games and was the third star of the week.
DALLASGames this week@ Los Angeles, vs. Calgary, vs. Minnesota, vs. Los Angeles
NotesThe Stars play four times this week but not three in four nights. Nevertheless, expect to see
Andrew Raycroft at least once in place of
Kari Lehtonen. The Stars are rested on Friday when they host the Wild as Minnesota are in Nashville the previous night. Look for
Steve Ott and
Krys Barch to add to their penalty minute totals when they play the Kings twice this week. The Stars were quiet on trade deadline day despite all the rumors that
Brad Richards was headed out of town.
Jamie Benn has been stellar since returning from a shoulder injury and has played over 21 minutes in his last four games.

DETROITGames this weekvs. Los Angeles, vs. Edmonton, @ St. Louis
Notes The Red Wings play three games in four nights so look for
Chris Osgood, who is scheduled to return on March 9, to play once in place of
Jimmy Howard. The Red Wings will be tired on Saturday when they play St. Louis after playing the Oilers the previous night. The Red Wings sat tight at the trade deadline.
Johan Franzen has gone 14 games without a goal but is the proud papa of a new son.
Mike Modano returned to action after a 41 game absence due to a cut tendon in his wrist.
EDMONTONGames this week@ Philadelphia, @ Washington, @ Detroit, @ Pittsburgh
NotesThe Oilers play all four games on the road, including three games in four nights so look for
Nikolai Khabibulin to return to action and play at least once in place of
Devan Dubnyk. The Oilers are tired on Wednesday when they are in Washington after playing the Flyers in Philadelphia on Tuesday. They are rested on Sunday when they face the Penguins who play Montreal the night before.
Ales Hemsky is hurt again and could be out the rest of the season so the Oilers revamped their top two lines as
Taylor Hall will play with
Shawn Horcoff and
Jordan Eberle, while
Magnus Paajarvi will line up with
Sam Gagner and
Linus Omark on the second line. They picked up prospect Colton Teubert at the deadline when they dealt top six forward
Dustin Penner to the Kings.
FLORIDAGames this weekvs. Chicago, vs. Ottawa, vs. Tampa Bay
NotesThe Panthers are rested when they take on the tired Lightning on Sunday as Tampa Bay at home to Ottawa on Saturday. The Panthers hit the midway mark of their seven game home stand against the Lightning as well. They picked up
Sergei Samsonov,
Evan Oberg,
Pat Rissmiller,
Niclas Bergfors and
Jake Hauswirth in four deals.
Jack Skille is likely gone for the season with a high ankle sprain as is
Rostislav Olesz with a knee injury.
LOS ANGELESGames this weekvs. Dallas, @ Detroit, @ Columbus, @ Dallas
NotesThe Kings play four times this week but not three in four nights. Expect to see
Jonathan Bernier at least once for
Jon Quick. The Kings made the blockbuster trade of the deadline when they acquired
Dustin Penner from the Oilers on Monday. Los Angeles plays the Stars twice this week so look for
Kyle Clifford and
Kevin Westgarth to add to their penalty minute totals.
Justin Williams has 20 goals and 49 points and the Kings rewarded him with a four-year extension worth $14.6 million.
MINNESOTAGames this weekvs. Colorado, @ Nashville, @ Dallas
NotesMinnesota play three games in four nights so look for
Jose Theodore and
Niklas Backstrom to share the net. The Wild are tired on Friday when they face the Stars after playing Nashville the previous night. The Wild did very little at the deadline trading
Anton Khudobin for a couple of minor leaguers in
Jeff Penner and
Mikko Lehtonen.
Mikko Koivu has resumed skating after suffering a broken finger but is likely a couple of weeks away from starting.
MONTREALGames this weekvs. Boston, @ St. Louis, @ Pittsburgh
NotesThe Canadiens are rested when they take on St. Louis on Thursday as the Blues are in Columbus the previous night. Coach Jacques Martin is not happy with his defensemen on the point during the power play so do not be surprised to see
Tomas Plekanec play there. The Habs did little at the deadline as they picked up a depth goalie in
Drew MacIntyre.
Jaroslav Spacek will miss four-six weeks after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery.
NASHVILLEGames this week@ San Jose, vs. Minnesota, vs. Colorado
NotesThe Predators are rested when they take on Colorado on Saturday as the Avs have to travel 1,021 miles from Denver where they meet Anaheim on Friday.
Pekka Rinne has played in 19 of the Predators last 20 games and is in line to play the rest of the way as long as Nashville is in playoff contention or has finally clinched a playoff spot.
Steve Sullivan could return by the middle of March.
Wade Belak has been sent to the minors and it looks like he may spend the rest of the season with Milwaukee.
Ryan Suter leads the Predators with a plus-21 rating and is tied with
Shea Weber with 13 power play points.
NEW JERSEYGames this weekvs. Ottawa, @ Atlanta, vs. New York Islanders
NotesThe Devils continue to make the most amazing push towards the playoffs. Heading into a January 9th date with the Lightning, New Jersey was 10-29-2 and firmly ensconced in the Eastern Conference basement. Since then, the Jacques Lemaire led squad, are 18-2-2 and are only 10 points out of the eighth and final playoff spot with three games in hand. If they are able to make the playoffs, it will be a better comeback than the 1951 New York Giants.
Zach Parise skated by himself for the first time on Thursday since knee surgery on November 2. The Devils traded away
Jason Arnott at the deadline and received
Dave Steckel in return.
NEW YORK ISLANDERSGames this weekvs. Toronto, vs. Boston, @ New Jersey
NotesThe Islanders are rested on Friday when they play a tired Boston team as the Bruins are home to Buffalo on Thursday.
Trevor Gillies obviously did not go to an Ivy League school. In his first game back after serving a nine game suspension for elbowing
Eric Tangradi in a fight filled game against the Penguins on Feb. 11, he collided the Wild's
Cal Clutterbuck on a very questionable hit and will go in front of the NHL's disciplinary committee on Friday, with another lengthy suspension likely.
Al Montoya is 4-2-1 since his trade from Phoenix and has given the Islanders solid netminding. The Islanders did nothing on trade deadline day Monday.
NEW YORK RANGERSGames this week@ Anaheim, @ San Jose
NotesThe Rangers play only twice this week so we recommend benching all your Rangers, if you can, especially since
Marian Gaborik is out with a concussion injury. He could be back this week, but you never know with concussions. The Rangers are reeling and are in danger of falling out of playoffs as they are currently in the eighth and final spot.
Martin Biron broke his collarbone in practice on Monday and is likely out for the rest of the regular season. The Rangers recalled
Cameron Talbot in his place but look for
Henrik Lundqvist to play the rest of the way. The Rangers only picked up minor leaguer
John Mitchell at the deadline despite all the
Brad Richards rumors, although they did get
Bryan McCabe on Saturday.
OTTAWAGames this week@ New Jersey, @ Florida, @ Tampa Bay, @ Buffalo
NotesThe Senators play four times this week, including three games in four nights so look for Curtis McElhinney to play at least once in place of
Craig Anderson. The Senators are tired on Friday when they play a rested Tampa Bay squad after Ottawa is in Florida on Thursday. They are the rested team Sunday in Buffalo as the Sabres return home from playing the Maple Leafs in Toronto on Saturday night.
Craig Anderson has been terrific for Ottawa since they acquired him on Feb. 18 from the Avalanche as he has allowed only seven goals on 204 shots in six games. He is 4-2-0 in that stretch. The Senators picked up
Curtis McElhinney at the deadline off waivers.
PHILADELPHIAGames this weekvs. Edmonton, @ Toronto, vs. Atlanta
NotesThe Flyers are rested on Saturday when they take on Atlanta as the Thrashers are home to New Jersey the night before. The Flyers tweaked their team slightly on Monday, picking up
Tom Sestito from Columbus for a couple of minor leaguers
Greg Moore and
Michael Chaput.
Daniel Briere has only two goals in his last 13 games.
Chris Pronger returned to the lineup on Thursday after missing one game with a hand injury.
PHOENIXGames this weekvs. Vancouver, vs. Calgary, @ Anaheim
NotesThe Coyotes are rested on Thursday when they entertain the Flames as Calgary are in Dallas the previous night. Phoenix made a great pickup at the deadline in getting
Rostislav Klesla from the Blue Jackets, but they had to give up
Scottie Upshall and
Sami Lepisto in exchange. The sale of the Coyotes to Matthew Hulsizer is in some doubt and it is possible the franchise could leave town and move to Winnipeg.
Ray Whitney returned to action this past week after missing three games with a lower body injury.
PITTSBURGHGames this weekvs. Buffalo, vs. Montreal, vs. Edmonton
NotesThe Penguins are tired on Sunday and play a rested Edmonton team. The Penguins continue to be plagued by injuries as only
Kris Letang is healthy player from their top power play unit at the beginning of the season.
Chris Kunitz could return by March 6 and that will help. With
Sidney Crosby and
Evgeni Malkin out of action, the Penguins top line this week is
Mark Letestu centering
Alexei Kovalev and
James Neal. The Penguins were quiet on trade deadline day.
ST. LOUISGames this weekvs. Columbus, @ Columbus, vs. Montreal, vs. Detroit
NotesThe Blues play four times this week but not three times in four nights.
Jaroslav Halak(hand) is expected to return so the Blues will likely not want to risk further injury by playing him all four times so look for
Ty Conklin to play as well. St. Louis is tired on Thursday when they take on a rested Montreal squad as they play in Columbus the night before, but the tables are turned as the Blues are rested on Saturday when they are hosting Detroit after the Red Wings are home to the Oilers the previous night. The Blues play a home-and-home series against Columbus this week so look for
B.J. Crombeen and
David Backes to add to their penalty minutes total. The Blues did nothing on trade deadline day but did call up
Chris Porter.
SAN JOSEGames this weekvs. Nashville, vs. Vancouver, vs. New York Rangers
NotesThe Sharks play all three games at home this week as they end a six game home stand. The Sharks are red hot as they have won eight games in a row and now are in first place in the Pacific division.
Antti Niemi has played in 20 straight games and has won 17 of them. The Sharks rewarded the netminder with a four-year contract extension worth $15.2 million.
Dan Boyle has missed the last three games with an upper body injury.
TAMPA BAYGames this weekvs. Washington, vs. Chicago, vs. Ottawa, @ Florida
NotesThe Lightning play three games in four nights so look for
Mike Smith to play once in place of
Dwayne Roloson. The Lightning get a big break this week as they play three of their four games against tired opponents while playing tired once as they face a rested Florida team on Saturday after playing the Senators on Friday. They are rested and face tired teams when they play Washington, Chicago and Ottawa on Monday, Wednesday and Friday respectively. The Lightning were quiet at the deadline.
TORONTOGames this week@ New York Islanders, vs. Philadelphia, vs. Buffalo
NotesThe Maple Leafs are suddenly back in a playoff race and they have goaltender
James Reimer to thank for it. Toronto has played in nine straight one-goal games and are 6-0-3 to trail the New York Rangers by only three points in race for the eighth and final playoff spot.
Phil Kessel has quieted some doubters of late and was actually the NHL's first star of the week. The Maple Leafs made all their moves well before the trade deadline and only sent
John Mitchell to the Rangers on deadline day in exchange for a seventh round pick in 2012.
Dion Phaneuf has two goals and five points in his last five games as it certainly looks as if he is fully recovered from the nasty cut he took to his leg in November from the skate of
Peter Regin.
VANCOUVERGames this week@ Phoenix, @ San Jose, @ Calgary
NotesThe Canucks are on the road for all three games this week as they end a five game road trip. The Canucks added depth to their fourth line at the trade deadline as they picked up
Christopher Higgins,
Maxim Lapierre and
MacGregor Sharp.
Daniel Sedin has gone three straight games without a point for the first time this season while
Alex Burrows has gone nine games without a goal.
Kevin Bieksa should return by the middle of March.
WASHINGTONGames this week@ Tampa Bay, vs. Edmonton, vs. Carolina, vs. Chicago
NotesThe Capitals are a tired team on Monday when they face the Lightning as Washington are in Florida on Sunday. They are rested when they play at home on Wednesday as their opponents, the Edmonton Oilers, face Philadelphia the night before.
Semyon Varlamov is out of action so
Michal Neuvirth will get the bulk of the netminding duties for now with
Braden Holtby backing up. The Capitals picked up
Jason Arnott at the deadline, giving up
Dave Steckel in return. They also made a smart move in getting offensive defenseman
Dennis Wideman from the Panthers.
