Subban & Brassard Net Gains

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

This week's CHL Report will take another peek at some players of note from the Ontario Hockey League, the Western Hockey League and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League:

J.C. Lipon (Kamloops Blazers)- The 19-year-old forward was named WHL Player of the Week for a second straight week on Monday.  He racked up six goals and four assists in three wins for the Blazers to earn the honor again.  Lipon leads all WHL players in scoring with 22 points in only nine contests.  He is in his fourth year with Kamloops and his strong play has helped him begin the year with an 8-0-0-1 record.  His play this season should land him on an NHL team's radar.  Lipon's linmate and Colorado prospect Colin Smith sits second in league scoring with 18 points, including 11 helpers, on the year.

Morgan Rielly (TOR - Moose Jaw Warriors) - The offensive defender contributed five assists and a plus-5 rating in a  9-0 win against Prince Albert last Saturday.  Rielly is currently tied for second among WHL defensemen in scoring with 12 points in nine games this campaign.  Toronto's first-round selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft should be among the league's top scoring blueliners all season long.  An injury to his ACL cost him the vast majority of 2011-12, but he still finished with 18 points in 18 contests.  A healthy and productive year should put him into big league conversations with the Leafs before too long, though.

Vincent Trocheck (FLA - Saginaw Spirit) - The Saginaw captain was passed over in favour of Mississauga's Dylan Smoskowitz for OHL Player of the Week distinction, but he enjoyed a fruitful week's worth of action, anyway.  The Florida Panthers prospect recorded two goals and four assists in three games to boost his point total to 16 on the season.  He presently sits tied for second in league scoring, just one point behind Oshawa's Boone Jenner.  Trocheck was chosen in the third round of the 2011 draft class by the Panthers and although he's not as highly touted as some of the team's other NHL hopefuls, a successful  2012-13 campaign could help raise his profile on the depth chart.

Malcolm Subban (BOS - Belleville Bulls) - The Bruins first rounder allowed just two goals on 77 shots in a pair of wins last week for Belleville.  He turned aside 44 in a 4-1 win over Oshawa on Saturday despite the fact that the Bulls were outshot 45-28 in the match.  Subban owns a 5-2-1-0 record on the year.  His .934 save percentage and 2.08 goals-against average rank him third in the OHL in both categories.  He wouldn't have made Boston's roster out of training camp this season even if there wasn't a lockout, but his development is being watched closely by the team's brass and they are pleased with his progress.

Sven Andrighetto (Rouyn-Noranda Huskies) - The Swiss winger was the QMJHL's first star of the week after he picked up four goals and nine points in four games.  He fired 24 shots on goal and finished the week with a plus-4 rating.  Andrighetto has the second most points in the league, with 22 in 11 games, and is one point behind 2013 draft-eligible prospect and teammate Jean-Sebastien Dea for the QMJHL lead.

Francois Brassard (OTT - Quebec Remparts) - The Remparts netminder has made great strides upward in his play early into this season.  He has gotten off to a 7-1-0-0 start after finishing the 2011-12 campaign with a solid 20-10-3-0 record to go with a 2.80 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage.  Brassard's  1.87 GAA is fourth best in the league and so is his .926 save percentage.  The Ottawa Senators picked him in the sixth round of the 2012 draft and they may have found themselves a diamond in the rough if he continues to shut down the opposition like this for the balance of the year.
