Western Players Update

With the lockout finally ending, players won’t have much time to get ready before the NHL season gets underway.  Many players didn’t do much more than practice during the work stoppage, but there were others that found employment in Europe or were eligible to play in the AHL.  Those players should have an advantage going into the shortened season and that’s especially true for those that played in the AHL or KHL.

We’ve compiled a list of what many Western Conference players did in European and minor leagues over the last few months.

ANAHEIM DUCKS  

Matt Beleskey had 33 points and 39 penalty minutes in 26 games with the Coventry Blaze of the United Kingdom’s Elite Ice Hockey League.   Andrew Cogliano scored two goals and six points in seven games with Austria’s Klagenfurter AC.   Viktor Fasth had a 1.68 GAA and .942 save percentage in 12 contests with Tingsryd of the second-tier league in Sweden.   Cam Fowler scored two goals and seven points in 13 games with Sodertalje of Sweden's second-tier league.   Bobby Ryan had 10 goals and three assists in 10 games with Mora of Sweden's second-tier league.   Luca Sbisa had five goals and seven assists in 30 contests with Lugano of the Swiss League.  

CALGARY FLAMES  

Anton Babchuk had three points, 22 penalty minutes, and a minus-nine rating in 31 contests with the KHL’s Donbass Donetsk.   Mikael Backlund scored 12 goals and registered 18 assists in 23 games with Vasteras of Sweden's second-tier league.   Sven Baertschi had six goals and 18 points in 21 games with the AHL Abbotsford Heat.   TJ Brodie scored a goal and recorded 19 assists in 34 AHL contests with the Abbotsford Heat.   Chris Butler had no points and eight penalty minutes in five games with Karlskrona of the second-tier league in Sweden.   Roman Cervenka scored five goals and 13 points in nine games with HC Slavia Praha of the Czech League.  He added another two points in five contests while playing with the KHL’s Lev Praha.   Roman Horak netted 14 goals and recorded five assists in 34 games with the AHL Abbotsford Heat.   Jiri Hudler had one assist in four games with the KHL’s Lev Praha.  He also had three goals and two assists in four contests with HC Trinec of the Czech League.  

CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS  

Bryan Bickell scored nine goals and registered 18 assists in 28 Austrian league contests with Orli Znojmo.   Michael Frolik had 14 goals and 10 assists in 32 Czech league games with KLH Chomutov.   Niklas Hjalmarsson had six goals and 22 points in 18 games with Bolzano in the Italian league.   Patrick Kane scored 13 goals and 23 points in 20 matches with Biel of the Swiss league.   Andrew Shaw had 14 points and 84 penalty minutes in 28 AHL contests with the Rockford IceHogs.   Viktor Stalberg had seven goals and five assists in 11 SEL games with Frolunda of the SEL.  He also scored three goals and eight points in 13 contests with the KHL’s Atlant Mytishchi.  

COLORADO AVALANCHE  

Matt Duchene had four goals and 14 points in 19 SEL contests with Frolunda.  He also scored two goals and registered three assists in four games with Ambrì-Piotta of the Swiss league.   Stefan Elliott scored three goals and registered five assists in 33 contests with the AHL Lake Erie Monsters.   Gabriel Landeskog had six goals and eight assists in 17 games with Djurgarden of Sweden's second-tier league.   Ryan O’Byrne scored two goals and 11 points in 16 ECHL games with the Florida Everblades.   Mark Olver had 22 points and 29 penalty minutes in 36 contests with the AHL’s Lake Erie Monsters.   Paul Stastny netted seven goals and recorded 11 assists in 13 DEL games with the EHC Munchen.   Semyon Varlamov had a 1.74 GAA and .946 save percentage in 16 games with the KHL’s Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.  

COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS  

Artem Anisimov netted 12 goals and recorded 18 assists in 36 contests with the KHL’s Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.   Sergei Bobrovsky had a 1.94 GAA and .932 save percentage in 24 games with the KHL’s SKA St. Petersburg. Derick Brassard scored four goals and five points in six Austrian games with EC Salzburg.   Brandon Dubinsky had 16 points and 22 penalty minutes in 17 ECHL contests with the Alaska Aces.   Nikita Nikitin scored two goals and 14 points in 33 games with the KHL’s Avangard Omsk.   Vaclav Prospal had 23 points and 46 penalty minutes in 19 contests with HC Ceske Budejovice of the Czech League.   Fedor Tyutin had a goal and an assist in 17 contests with the KHL’s Atlant Mytishchi.  

DALLAS STARS  

Loui Eriksson had three goals and six points in seven Swiss contests with Davos.  He also found the back of the net twice and added an assist in five contests with Davos during the Spengler Cup.   Jaromir Jagr scored 24 goals and 55 points in 33 Czech games with HC Kladno.   Philip Larsen scored five goals and 15 points in 27 SM-liiga games with Lukko.   Eric Nystrom had four goals and 14 points in six games with the Stavanger Oilers of Norway’s top hockey league.   Stephane Robidas had five points and 22 penalty minutes in 15 SM-liiga contests with HIFK.   Tom Wandell scored two goals and nine points in 26 games with the KHL’s Severstal Cherepovets.  

DETROIT RED WINGS  

Damien Brunner netted 25 goals and 57 points in 33 games with Zug of the Swiss league.   Pavel Datsyuk had 10 goals and 36 points in 31 games with the KHL’s CSKA Moscow.   Valtteri Filppula found the back of the net six times and recorded nine assists in 16 matches with Jokerit of the SM-liiga.   Jakub Kindl scored a goal and registered 10 assists in 27 Czech contests with HC Pardubice.   Drew Miller scored 15 goals and 30 points in 23 contests with the Braehead Clan of the United Kingdom’s Elite Ice Hockey League.   Jan Mursak scored 19 goals and 47 points in 30 Austrian games with Olimpija Ljubljana.   Kyle Quincey scored two goals and 11 points in 12 games with the Denver Cutthroats of the Central Hockey League.   Henrik Zetterberg scored 16 goals and 32 points in 23 matches with Zug of the Swiss league.  

EDMONTON OILERS  

Jordan Eberle netted 25 goals and recorded 26 assists in 34 contests with the AHL Oklahoma City Barons.   Sam Gagner had 10 goals and 20 points in 21 games with Klagenfurt AC of the Austrian league.   Taylor Hall scored 14 goals and 34 points in 26 AHL contests with the Oklahoma City Barons.   Ales Hemsky had 32 points and 52 penalty minutes in 27 Czech games with HC Pardubice.   Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored eight goals and 20 points in 19 AHL games with the Oklahoma City Barons.  He also had four goals and 15 points in six games with Team Canada during the 2013 World Junior Championship.   Corey Potter had a goal and four points in 17 games with the Vienna Capitals of the Austrian league.   Justin Schultz scored 18 goals and 48 points in 34 matches with the AHL Oklahoma City Barons.   Ladislav Smid scored two goals and 14 points in 22 Czech games with Bili Tygri Liberec.  


LOS ANGELES KINGS  

Dustin Brown had 13 points and 26 penalty minutes in 16 contests with Zurich of the Swiss league.   Kyle Clifford scored four goals and registered three assists in nine games with the ECHL’s Ontario (California) Reign.   Dwight King scored five goals and 17 points in 28 contests with the AHL Manchester Monarchs.   Anze Kopitar had 10 goals and 34 points in 30 games with Mora of the second-tier league in Sweden.   Trevor Lewis scored three goals and registered six assists in six matches with the ECHL Utah Grizzlies.   Alec Martinez had a goal and an assist in 11 SM-liiga games with TPS.  He also recorded two points with the Central Hockey League’s Allen Americans.  

MINNESOTA WILD  

Charlie Coyle netted 12 goals and registered eight assists in 35 contests with the AHL’s Houston Aeros.   Mikael Granlund scored eight goals and 21 points in 21 AHL games with the Houston Aeros.   Mikko Koivu scored five goals and 10 points in 10 games with TPS of the SM-liiga.   Devin Setoguchi had four goals and 13 points in 10 ECHL contests with the Ontario (California) Reign.   Jared Spurgeon netted three goals and registered four assists in 13 Swiss games with Langnau.   Clayton Stoner had a goal and five points in eight Slovakian contests with HC Banska Bystrica.  

NASHVILLE PREDATORS  

Jonathon Blum scored a goal and registered 11 assists in 34 games with the AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals.   Roman Josi scored six goals and 17 points in 26 games with Bern of the Swiss league.   Kevin Klein had three points and 29 penalty minutes in eight games with Herlev of Denmark’s AL-Bank Ligaen.   Sergei Kostitsyn had 29 points and 42 penalty minutes in 27 contests with the KHL’s Avangard Omsk.   Pekka Rinne had a 3.08 GAA and .897 save percentage in 22 games with the KHL’s Dinamo Minsk.   Craig Smith had eight points and 20 penalty minutes in eight SM-liiga games with KalPa.  

PHOENIX COYOTES  

Paul Bissonnette scored six goals and 21 points in 11 games with the Cardiff Devils of the United Kingdom’s Elite Ice Hockey League.   Mikkel Boedker netted 21 goals and recorded 12 assists in 29 SM-liiga matches with Lukko.   Kyle Chipchura scored two goals and registered 11 assists in 10 games with the Central Hockey League’s Arizona Sundogs.   Martin Hanzal had 19 points and 73 penalty minutes in 18 games with the Czech league’s HC Ceske Budejovice.   Rostislav Klesla had an assist and 30 penalty minutes in 18 Czech contests with HC Trinec.   Lauri Korpikoski scored six goals and 17 points in 11 SM-liiga games with TPS.   David Schlemko scored three goals and recorded seven assists in 14 games with the Arizona Sundogs of the Central Hockey League.  

SAN JOSE SHARKS  

Logan Couture scored seven goals and 23 points in 22 Swiss games with Geneve Servette.   Jason Demers netted five goals and registered 16 assists in 30 SM-liiga games with Karpat.   Thomas Greiss had a 3.47 GAA and .905 save percentage in nine games with the DEL’s Hannover Scorpions.   Michal Handzus scored nine goals and recorded 10 assists in 15 Slovakian matches with HC Banska Bystrica.   Douglas Murray had three points and 36 penalty minutes in 14 contests with Djurgarden of Sweden's second-tier league.   Antti Niemi had a 3.11 GAA and .905 save percentage in 10 SM-liiga contests with the Pelicans.   Joe Pavelski scored seven goals and 14 points in 17 games with the KHL’s Dinamo Minsk.   Joe Thornton had 12 goals and 36 points in 33 Swiss contests with Davos.  

ST. LOUIS BLUES  

Patrik Berglund had 20 goals and 32 points in 30 games with Vasteras of Sweden's second-tier league.   Roman Polak had eight points and 79 penalty minutes in 22 Czech games with HC Vitkovice.   Ryan Reaves had nine points and 34 penalty minutes in 13 ECHL games with the Orlando Solar Bears.   Kris Russell scored two goals and registered 12 assists in 15 SM-liiga contests with TPS.   Kevin Shattenkirk had six points and 22 penalty minutes in 12 SM-liiga games with TPS.   Vladimir Sobotka scored 10 goals and registered 15 assists in 27 Czech matches with HC Slavia Praha.   Alexander Steen scored eight goals and 23 points in 20 contests with Modo of the Swedish Elite League.  

VANCOUVER CANUCKS  

Andrew Ebbett scored seven goals and 21 points in 29 AHL games with the Chicago Wolves.   Jannik Hansen had 17 points and 43 penalty minutes in 20 SM- liiga contests with Tappara.   Zack Kassian had 20 points and 61 penalty minutes in 28 contests with the AHL Chicago Wolves.   Cory Schneider had a 3.22 GAA and a .914 save percentage in eight games with Ambrì-Piotta of the Swiss league.   Dale Weise scored five goals and 15 points with Tilburg Trappers of the Netherlands’ Eredivisie.
