Fasth Out of the Blocks!Sunday, February 10, 2013
This week's Waiver Wired features a late blooming netminder, a few emerging young talents, a rebounding power forward and a returning defenseman.
Viktor Fasth (G - Anaheim Ducks) - Fasth has emerged as a hot commodity on the fantasy scene. He is currently owned in 48 percent of Yahoo! leagues and that number is expected to grow, so act quickly if you want to add some depth to your goaltending. The 30-year-old keeper has won all five of his starts, while posting a miniscule 1.72 goals-against average, an impressive .932 save percentage and one shutout. He looked good off the bench in relief of Jonas Hiller, who left the game with a minor lower-body issue in Friday's loss to Dallas. Hiller's injury is not believed to be anything to worry about, but his struggles this season have opened the door for Fasth to steal starts from him. He's worth picking up right now while he's hot because he should continue to play and play well. He could also prove to be a savvy addition in the long term as well if Hiller can't right himself.
Adam Henrique (C - New Jersey Devils) - The sophomore center returned to New Jersey's lineup on January 31st from surgery on his left thumb back in late November. Henrique has racked up three goals and one assist in five games since getting back to action. He has been effective on the team's second line between Patrik Elias and David Clarkson. Elias and Clarkson have been outstanding in the early going of the 2013 campaign. They co-lead the Devils with 13 points after 10 games going into Saturday's contests. Henrique should benefit from playing alongside the team's hottest players. He enjoyed a great rookie year when he finished with 51 points in 74 matches and he was equally as exciting in the playoffs when he racked up 13 points over 24 appearances, including a pair of series-winning goals. Henrique should be a strong contributor to the team's offense for the remainder of the year and he's owned in just 25 percent of Yahoo! leagues, so there's a good chance he's available.
Colin Wilson (C, LW - Nashville Predators) - The 23-year-old forward is beginning to heat up for the Predators with two goals and four helpers in his last three games. Wilson began the year with only one assist in seven contests, but he's finally starting to get going. He has plenty of upside as he serves in the club's top-six group, but he still has to display more consistency. If you are looking for a short-term fix with the potential for more, Wilson is a good option for active fantasy GMs. He is owned in only 4 percent of Yahoo! leagues.
Matt Frattin (RW - Toronto Maple Leafs) - When the 2013 season began, Matt Frattin was in the minors following a disappointing showing at training camp. Then Joffrey Lupul and Clarke MacArthur went down due to injuries and Frattin was brought up to help fill the void. Since joining the team, Frattin has compiled six goals and two assists, with 14 shots, in eight games. He has developed a great deal of chemistry with center Nazem Kadri and should have a roster spot locked up for the foreseeable future. Frattin can also chip for leagues that count hits, as he has been credited with 11 so far. He is the property of 13 percent of Yahoo! fantasy owners and he is definitely worthy of a flier, especially if you are in a deep league.
Rene Bourque (LW - Montreal Canadiens) - Bourque provided fantasy GMs with three productive seasons in Calgary before falling off the rails last year. He managed just 24 points in 76 games between the Flames and Canadiens in 2011-12. With Montreal, he was especially disappointing with five goals, three assists and a minus-16 rating in 38 contests. However, during the early part of the lockout-shortened season, Bourque has turned it around and is playing very well as a top-six forward. He has accounted for three goals and seven points in 10 games, while chipping in 31 shots, 10 penalty minutes and 12 hits. Bourque has formed a solid combination with center Tomas Plekanec and right winger Brian Gionta, who are enjoying resurgent seasons of their own. He's owned in 10 percent of Yahoo! leagues, so he's more than likely available and waiting to help your squad.
Lubomir Visnovsky (D - New York Islanders) - Visnovsky is expected to make his Islanders debut Saturday night after unsuccessfully trying to get away from the team twice. The 36-year-old blueliner tried to void his trade to Long Island by claiming he had a valid no-trade clause and he didn't report for the start of training camp with the hope of playing out the year in the KHL. The team and Visnovsky appear to be willing to put all of that behind them, though, as he has reported to the club and is ready to play out the final year of his contract. The offensive defenseman should get plenty of power-play time, where he should produce the majority of his points this campaign. Visnovsky is owned in 29 percent of Yahoo! leagues, so several owners have been fairly patient with him so far and are waiting to be rewarded, while others have probably snatched him up recently. Either way, if you need some offensive support from your back end, Visnovsky should prove to be a good choice.
