Penguins pour it on with Iggy

Thursday, March 28, 2013

Well, it turns out that I wasn’t being hasty in breaking down Jarome Iginla’s potential destinations on Wednesday. The Calgary Flames finally made the decision/suddenly slam-dunked the decision a week early (depending upon your viewpoint*) to trade Iginla … but not without a weird moment or two for the media.

It seemed apparent that the Boston Bruins won the Iggy Sweepstakes with a two prospects + a (conditional) first-round pick … until it turned out that they didn’t. Instead, as you probably know, the Pittsburgh Penguins landed him instead.

From the sound of things, Iginla followed Brenden Morrow’s lead in choosing the Penguins over the Bruins. Boy, that potential playoff series could be that much more fun now, wouldn’t it?

I’ll keep my analysis of the Iginla acquisition brief because the points from Wednesday’s Dose are still pretty fresh.

IGGY’S IMPACT

I’d venture it’s highly likely that Jarome Iginla slides into one of two spots: with Chris Kunitz and Sidney Crosby or with Evgeni Malkin and James Neal. I don’t think you need too much goading to realize that both scenarios are potentially lucrative.

The winners of the Iginla grand prix other than the Penguins are Iginla owners. Pittsburgh is a better opportunity than Boston, with the only caveat moving in the other direction being that he might not get quite the same plum power play gig as he could have for the B’s.

Overall, it’s great for Iginla owners. While it’s great to be “The Guy” in fantasy, it’s even better to be surrounded by talent on a great team.

Speaking of great teams, the Bruins are still a pretty impressive bunch. Still, it must feel like they went to the store to get some delicious ice cream and now they’re wading through sherbet because some black-and-gold glutton stocked up on all the Rocky Road.

After the jump: some possible treats for the Bruins.

* - Of course, there’s also the “broke our hearts” contingent if you’re a Flames fan still-not-ready to say goodbye to the beloved star.
