Look who's back

In what’s likely the least surprising news of the day (aside from Boston Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli being perturbed about missing out on Iginla), Ed Jovanovski’s season is over as he’s decided to undergo hip surgery. At this point, he’s unlikely to do what he used to - which is frustrate fantasy owners with his combination of ruggedness, scoring talent and frequent injuries - because most people probably aren’t even in leagues where he was owned.

The word is it might not be a career-ending issue, but his career certainly is winding down. That’s a shame, too, because he was a useful player with an incredible nickname.

Then again, when you consider the fact that Steve Sullivan improbably crossed the 1,000 regular season games played barrier last night, it’s not crazy to wonder if Jovanovski has a little more left in the tank than expected. (He’s at 1,091 regular season GP himself, by the way).

James Wisniewski returned to action last night after missing a month-plus with a broken foot … Antti Niemi has back-to-back shutouts. He’s an underrated mid-level workhorse in fantasy, regardless of his real-world warts … Cory Schneider has won six games in a row, making a Roberto Luongo trade seem that much more likely, but the Vancouver Canucks seem pretty stubborn about this one. We’ll see … Braydon Coburn is your latest injured Philadelphia Flyers defenseman with an upper-body injury … Chris Neil seemed to get his leg cut by a skate blade, yet he returned to action. Keep an eye on updates, but so far, it looks like a dodged bullet … Marc-Andre Fleury reportedly skated with the Penguins on Thursday. Even so, I’d say it’s not a bad idea to make at least a short-term investment in Tomas Vokoun, who shut out the Jets last night … Going back to overly hated Leafs, Dion Phaneuf now has 21 points (and 41 PIM) in 35 games. Not bad for the blueliner who's somehow just 27 years old … It’s probably time to take the New York Islanders seriously. At least if you’re the New York Rangers … Brian Elliott’s been sent to the AHL for a conditioning stint. Gotta think the Blues would love to find a way to deal the former All-Star … Radim Vrbata (two goals, one assist), Martin Hanzal (one goal and two assists) and Rostislav Klesla (four[!] assists) were among the biggest box score beneficiaries from that 7-4 Coyotes win.
