Ovechkin on Fire!

Monday, October 7, 2013

The first week of the NHL schedule always skews stats, especially during the power play as the usual first units could have just been on the ice and the second unit scores, or someone who usually plays with the man-advantage is in the penalty box.

It's not too late to join a Yahoo! Hockey pool.

The Washington Capitals were outstanding this week with the man-advantage as they led the league with six power play goals. Alex Ovechkin led the way with five points while Mike Green and Mikhail Grabovski each had four. Joffrey Lupul led all non-Capitals with three points.

Editor's Note: Rotoworld's partner FanDuel is hosting a $2,000 Fantasy Hockey league that includes Monday and Tuesday's NHL games. It's just $10 to join and first prize is $400. Starts Monday at 9:30pm ET. Here's the link.

Corey Perry:  1 point in 11:36 minutes of power play time.

Ryan Getzlaf: 1 point in 11:20.

Cam Fowler: Zero points in 11:18.

Nick Bonino: 1 point in 10:28.

Sami Vatanen: Three points in 10:15.

Mathieu Perreault: Zero points in 6:38.

The Ducks were 1-9 this week. Nick Bonino picked up the only goal with Perry and Getzlaf assisting. Fowler and Vatanen were on the points for the goal. Francois Beauchemin saw plenty of power play time last season for the Ducks but saw only 5:00 minutes of second unit time. Teemu Selanne will also see time on the first unit when he plays.

Zdeno Chara: 1 point in 7:06 minutes of power play time.

Jarome Iginla: Zero points in 6:30.

David Krejci: 1 point in 6:28.

Milan Lucic: 2 points in 6:24.

Torey Krug: Zero points in 5:34.

Dougie Hamilton: Zero points in 4:01.

The Bruins were 2-7 this week. Boston has had one of the weakest power plays over the last two years so rookie Torey Krug is getting a big chance on the point and thus far he has a goal and an assist with the man-advantage. Chara had the other goal with Lucic picking up two assists. It's a surprise not seeing Loui Eriksson's name on the top line.

Thomas Vanek: Zero points in 13:34 minutes of power play time.

Tyler Myers: Zero points in 13:22.

Cody Hodgson: Zero points in 13:21.

Christian Ehrhoff: Zero points in 13:20

Tyler Ennis: Zero points in 12:52.

Steve Ott: Zero points in 8:06.

The Sabres were 0-13 in the opening week of the season. They managed 15 shots on goal.

Dennis Wideman: Zero points in 13:01 minutes of power play time.

David Jones: Zero points in 12:15.

Kris Russell: Zero points in 11:43.

Jiri Hudler: 1 point in 11:35.

Curtis Glencross: Zero points in 9:36.

Mikael Backlund: Zero points in 7:43.

The Flames were 1-11. Hudler was the goal scorer with T.J. Brodie and Mark Giordano setting him up. Giordano was ninth in power play time playing 6:54 minutes over three games.

Ryan Murphy: Zero points in 8:45 minutes of power play time.

Alexander Semin: Zero points in 7:51.

Eric Staal: Zero points in 7:13.

Jiri Tlusty: Zero points in 6:50.

Nathan Gerbe: 1 point in 5:35.

Jeff Skinner: Zero points in 5:10.

The Hurricanes were 1-7.  Nathan Gerbe scored with Justin Faulk and Jay Harrison drawing assists. A lot of experts think that Faulk will be a big offensive weapon for the Hurricanes but they are giving Murphy the first shot at quarterbacking the power play.

Patrick Kane: Zero points in 9:28 minutes of power play time.

Patrick Sharp: Zero points in 9:22.

Duncan Keith: Zero points in 9:19.

Jonathan Toews: Zero points in 8:16.

Nick Leddy: 1 point in 7:35.

Marian Hossa: 1 point in 7:21.

Chicago was 2-9 this week. The second unit did all the scoring with Brandon Saad (who also assisted) and Brent Seabrook finding the back of the net. Leddy and Hossa had assists.

Erik Johnson: Zero points in 8:30 minutes of power play time.

Matt Duchene: 1 point in 7:53.

Paul Stastny: Zero points in 8:15.

P. A. Parenteau: Zero points in 7:55.

Ryan O'Reilly: 1 point in 7:53.

Alex Tanguay: 2 points in 7:31.

The Avs were 2-9 this week. Duchene and Steve Downie scored with Tanguay chipping in with assists on both goals. Downie also had a helper as did O'Reilly.

Cam Atkinson: 1 point in 5:36 minutes of power play time.

James Wisniewski: 1 point in 5:24.

Marian Gaborik: 1 point in 5:24.

Artem Anisimov: 1 point in 5:15.

Jack Johnson: 1 point in 5:13.

Nikita Nikitin: Zero points in 2:06.

The Blue Jackets were 2-5 during the opening week. Jack Johnson and Mark Letestu scored with Atkinson, Wisniewski, Gaborik and Brandon Dubinsky picking up assists. Dubinsky was eighth in power play time but expect that to increase. Atkinson is seeing first line minutes and well as leading the team in power play TOI.

Sergei Gonchar: Zero points in 4:55 minutes of power play time.

Ray Whitney: Zero points in 4:31.

Jamie Benn: Zero points in 4:20.

Erik Cole: Zero points in 4:20.

Tyler Seguin: Zero points in 4:20.

Alex Chiasson: Zero points in 4:20.

The Stars were 0-5 this week and had only one shot on net in the five opportunities. Look for Valeri Nichuskin to start seeing some ice time on the power play.

Daniel Alfredsson: Zero points in 9:23 minutes of power play time.

Henrik Zetterberg: Zero points in 9:20.

Niklas Kronwall: Zero points in 9:10.

Pavel Datsyuk: Zero points in 8:54.

Johan Franzen: Zero points in 8:13.

Daniel Cleary: Zero points in 7:31.

Detroit was 0-8 this week putting 11 shots on goal.  Justin Abdelkader is seeing first line minutes with Zetterberg and Datsyuk at full strength but has only 18 seconds of power play tine.
