Happy Thanksgiving!

Friday, November 22, 2013

A Happy Thanksgiving this week to all my American readers! There are only two games on Thursday with three of the four teams involved being Canadian but there are 12 games on Friday including an 11:30 morning start in Philadelphia as the Flyers host the Winnipeg Jets.

It’s still not too late to join a Yahoo! pool.

INJURIES

Alexander Semin is out with a concussion. (Click here to see the rest of the injury list.)

ANAHEIM

Games this week

@ Dallas, vs. Calgary, @ San Jose

Notes

Nick Bonino has been a nice surprise this season with six goals and 14 points as he is seeing plenty of first power play time. He has six power play points. Dustin Penner and Francois Beauchemin are 1-2 in the NHL in plus/minus with a plus 16 and 15 respectively. Despite a 7-3-2 record, Jonas Hiller is struggling in goal as he has a 2.79 GAA and a .894 save percentage. The Ducks could deal Hiller as he is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and go with Viktor Fasth and Frederik Andersen. Corey Perry is back among the elite in fantasy hockey with 12 goals, 24 points, a plus-10 rating and 20 penalty minutes in 24 games this season. He also has four game winning goals.

BOSTON

Games this week

vs. Pittsburgh, @ Detroit, vs. New York Rangers, vs. Columbus

Notes

Boston plays four times this week including three games in four nights so Chad Johnson should play once in place of Tuukka Rask. Rask has been spectacular this season (not Teri Hatcher spectacular but spectacular nevertheless) with a 12 -5-2 record to go with a 1.62 GAA and a .945 save percentage. Assuming that Josh Harding falls back to earth, Rask will be the leading contender for the Vezina Trophy. Loui Eriksson had a six game point scoring streak end on Tuesday. Reilly Smith has two goals and eight points in his last 10 games. Dennis Seidenberg should be back in the lineup this week after suffering a lower body injury on Tuesday.

BUFFALO

Games this week

vs. Montreal, vs. Toronto, @ New Jersey

Notes

The Sabres play three games in four nights this week so look for Jhonas Enroth to play once in place of Ryan Miller. The Sabres made a bunch of moves this week as they sent Nikita Zadorov back to junior hockey and Rasmus Ristolainen and Johan Larsson to the minors. They tried to send Mikhail Grigorenko to the minors on a conditioning stint as well but the NHL overruled the Sabres saying he had to go back to the QMJHL or stay with the Sabres. The Sabres have kept him on their roster for now. Ryan Miller is now 4-13-0 with a .918 save percentage. Mike Weber was activated off the injured reserve list as he has recovered from a broken thumb.

CALGARY

Games this week

@ Chicago, @ Anaheim, @ Los Angeles

Notes

The Flames are on the road for all three games this week and play them in four nights so expect to see Karri Ramo in goal once in place of the current number one Reto Berra. The Flames will be the tired team on Saturday in Los Angeles after playing in Anaheim Friday. Kris Russell is having a good season thus far with three goals and 12 points in 22 games as he has taken over the slack on the power play from the injured Mark Giordano. He is also the only Flame to have a positive plus/minus and played in more than two games at plus-one. Michael Cammalleri had nine goals in 15 games this season. Shane O'Brien leads the Flames with 32 penalty minutes.

CAROLINA

Games this week

@ New Jersey, vs. New Jersey, vs. Vancouver

Notes

The Hurricanes are the rested team on Sunday when hosting Vancouver as the Canucks are in New York Saturday to play the Rangers. The Hurricanes play a home-and-home series with the New Jersey Devils so look for Jay Harrison to get involved if there are any altercations. Jeff Skinner (upper body) returned to the lineup on Thursday but Alexander Semin was placed on the injured reserve list as he suffered a concussion on November 16.  The Hurricanes will have a tough decision to make once Anton Khudobin returns to action as Justin Peters has been terrific and will need to be put on waivers to send him back to the minors. Eric Staal is on a four game point streak and now has five goals and 13 points in 23 games.

CHICAGO

Games this week

@ Edmonton, @ Calgary, @ Dallas, @ Phoenix

Notes

The Chicago Blackhawks end a seven game road trip this week as they play four times including three in four nights. Chicago placed Nikolai Khabibulin on injured reserve with a lower body injury so look for Antti Raanta to place once in place of Corey Crawford. Chicago will be tired on Saturday when they are in Phoenix after playing in Dallas Friday. Marian Hossa returned to the lineup on Thursday after missing three games with a lower body injury. Bryan Bickell is out for two-three weeks with an ankle injury. Kris Versteeg is seeing third line minutes with Andrew Shaw. Patrick Kane leads the team with 12 goals and 24 points in 23 games but is minus-three.

COLORADO

Games this week

vs. St. Louis, @ Minnesota, vs. Minnesota

Notes

The Avalanche play three games in four nights this week so look for Jean-Sebastien Giguere who is a perfect 5-0 this season, to play once in place of Semyon Varlamov. They play the Wild in a home-and-home series so Cody McLeod and Patrick Bordeleau should definitely add to their penalty minute totals if there are any fisticuffs. Matt Duchene, who leads the team with 20 points in 19 games, will miss at least two games with an oblique injury. Gabriel Landeskog has two goals and five points in his last six games and now has 16 points in 20 games. Andre Benoit returned from a minor wrist injury and continues to lead the Avs in TOI during the power play and was in on all the Avs goals on Thursday with a goal and two assists. P. A. Parenteau picked up his first two power play points of the season on Thursday.

COLUMBUS

Games this week

@ Toronto, vs. Nashville, vs. Edmonton, @ Boston

Notes

The Blue Jackets play three games in four nights so look for Curtis McElhinney to play once in place of Sergei Bobrovsky. The Blue Jackets will be the rested team Friday against the Oilers as Edmonton takes on the Predators in Nashville Thursday. Brandon Dubinsky sat out Wednesday’s game against Calgary with a bruised foot and he will be looked at again by doctors on Friday. Dubinsky has 15 points and 40 penalty minutes in 21 games thus far. Nathan Horton is starting to travel with the team but is not close to returning after off-season shoulder surgery as he still does not have his full range of motion. Look for a late December or even a January return. James Wisniewski leads the team with 16 points.

DALLAS

Games this week

vs. Anaheim, vs. Chicago, vs. Edmonton

Notes

It’s a big surprise but the Stars finally scored their first power play goal at home on Thursday as Stephane Robidas found the back of the net. It was the Stars first goal in 27 chances. Ray Whitney has returned to practice and the Stars hope that he will be healthy enough to play this week as he is suffering from a groin injury. Alex Chiasson has one goal and three assists in his last 11 games. Tyler Seguin was the second star of the week after scoring five goals and adding two helpers in three games. Rookie Valeri Nichushkin has two goals and four assists in his last eight games with a plus-eight rating. The Stars grabbed Dustin Jeffrey off waivers from the Penguins on Monday.

DETROIT

Games this week

vs. Boston, @ New York Islanders, @ Ottawa

Notes

Gustav Nyquist made his seasonal debut on Thursday and potted two goals including his first one just 17 seconds into the game. He is seeing second line duty alongside Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen and is worth picking up in deeper pools. Stephen Weiss has missed the last six games with a groin injury but could return as early as November 23. Dan DeKeyser had been playing outstanding with two goals and seven points in his last 10 games before he was put on the long-term injured reserve list with a sprained shoulder. He is expected to miss the next four-six weeks. Zetterberg leads the Red Wings with 11 goals and 26 points in 23 games.
