Wired: Granlund is heating up

Sunday, February 02, 2014

Ben Scrivens put on a goaltending performance for the ages this past Wednesday when he blanked the San Jose Sharks with a 59-save shutout. He passed Phoenix's Mike Smith, who made 54 stops on April 3, 2012, to establish a new record for saves by a goalie in a regular-season whitewashing during the expansion era. Scrivens had a rocky debut with the Oilers, but he has played well for his new club over his past three outings. He is slated to get the nod again Saturday afternoon against Boston. It's still an awfully small sample size, but on a short-term basis Scrivens appears to be a decent option if you are hurting for goalie help. He will probably continue to share the crease with Ilya Bryzgalov for the remainder of the season, but he has performed much better than expected. However, if the Oilers expect him to make 40-50 saves per game then I don't like his chances of success very much.

Here are some other players worth considering for the last week before the Olympic break:

Antoine Vermette (PHO) - C/LW - Owned in 34% of Yahoo! leagues

Vermette has already been a very popular addition over the past few days, but he's still available in 66% of Yahoo! leagues. He finished January with eight goals and 10 points in eight games. He leads the Coyotes with 20 goals on the year. Vermette has formed a dependable two-way combination with Mikkel Boedker and Lauri Korpikoski. Boedker, who also deserves some more fantasy attention, co-leads the Coyotes in scoring with 37 points in 54 games. Vermette receives power play and penalty kill minutes for Phoenix and he's strong in the faceoff circle as well, where he has taken 1,188 draws and he's won 56.1% of them.

Patrik Elias (NJD) - C/LW - Owned in 49% of Yahoo! leagues

Elias has been forced out of 15 games this season due to injuries, but since returning to New Jersey's lineup from his latest ailment he has been a catalyst for the team's offense. He has four goals and four assists in his last six contests. Elias is second on the Devils in scoring with 33 points in 41 games. If he can remain healthy then he's on pace to surpass 50 points by the end of the 2013-14 campaign. The 37-year-old forward can still produce and he's worthy of a spot on your roster if he's available.

Mikael Granlund (MIN) - C - Owned in 6% of Yahoo! leagues

The 21-year-old center has run hot and cold during his first full season in the NHL, but he's enjoyed his most successful stretch over the past month. Granlund registered two goals and 10 assists in 14 games in January. He has been slowed by concussion issues this campaign, but he appears to be putting those concerns behind him and his game is taking off as a result. He has played well with Zach Parise and Jason Pominville lately and the trio could be something that the Wild keep intact even when Mikko Koivu is able to return from his ankle injury. Granlund could be in store for a strong performance down the stretch, but for now he's worth adding based on his hot play alone.

Andrej Sekera (CAR) - D - Owned in 37% of Yahoo! leagues

Sekera is enjoying a career year with the Hurricanes this season. The former Sabres defenseman has already set personal bests this season in goals (8), assists (23) and points (31) in 52 games. He has also been red hot of late with one goal and six helpers in his last six matches. Sekera ranks second on the team in power-play points, with a total of 12, and he averages 23:41 of ice time per game, which trails only defense partner Justin Faulk for the club lead. Snatch him up if your blueline is lacking.

Jacob Trouba (WPG) - D - Owned in 21% of Yahoo! leagues

Trouba has displayed plenty of poise during his rookie season with the Jets and his long-term fantasy value appears to be through the roof. He has done a bit of everything this year, but his offensive potential should garner him interest in all formats. Trouba has seven goals and 21 points in 39 games. He also has 70 shots, 65 hits and 75 blocks. He has quickly earned the trust of his coaches and leads all first-year NHLers in average ice time with 21:39 per match. The 19-year-old blueliner has three goals and five assists in his past eight contests and he'll be a building block in Winnipeg for years to come.

Cody Hodgson (BUF) - C/RW - Owned in 34% of Yahoo! leagues

Hodgson leads the offensively-challenged Sabres in scoring with 14 goals and 29 points in 43 games. He has notched six markers and four assists in his last 10 matches. His offensive output was expected to slow down after Buffalo dealt Thomas Vanek to the Islanders, but he's remained fairly productive. He had nine points in 13 games with Vanek in the lineup and without him, Hodgson has generated 20 points in 30 appearances. Most Buffalo players should be avoided in fantasy hockey this year, but Hodgson isn't one of them.

Reilly Smith (BOS) - RW - Owned in 40% of Yahoo! leagues

Whenever it looks like Smith is about to slow down, he picks up a pile of points again. He goes through brief three-game skids before breaking out again offensively and he's done this a few times this season. Smith, who was acquired as part of the Tyler Seguin deal from Dallas, has been a steal for the Bruins. He leads the team with 18 goals and he's second on the club with 40 points entering Saturday's action. Loui Eriksson was the centerpiece of the trade from the Stars, but his play has suffered due to concussions and Smith has earned his spot alongside Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand instead.

Mikael Backlund (CAL) - C - Owned in 4% of Yahoo! leagues

The Flames have been waiting for Backlund to step up for quite some time and he's finally showing signs of living up to his potential. He has registered two-point outings in each of his past three games entering Saturday's action. Backlund has already set a new personal best with 11 goals and he's matched his previous high with 25 points after 53 games. Consistency is still an issue for him, but he could be worth a flier if your league is deep and options on the wire are limited.
