Kopitar King of LA Again

Friday, November 10, 2017

There was the big trade this past week and it has been re-hashed a lot. I mention the Duchene-Turris-Colorado deal in the team reports so we don’t have to talk about it here.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have the best team in the NHL thus far but the St. Louis Blues (despite their injuries) and the Los Angeles Kings are close behind. Both the Lightning and Kings failed to make the playoffs last season so it just goes to show you how topsy-turvy the NHL really is.

There is plenty of information and good chatter always on the Rotoworld Hockey Podcast. Listen here.

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 13-19

4 Games – Carolina, Dallas, Florida, Los Angeles

3 Games – Arizona, Boston, Buffalo, Calgary, Colorado, Detroit, Edmonton, Minnesota, Montreal, Nashville, New York Islanders, New York Rangers,  Ottawa, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Vancouver, Vegas, Washington, Winnipeg

2 Games - Anaheim, Chicago, Columbus, New Jersey, San Jose, Tampa Bay, Toronto

Arizona, Boston, Dallas, Florida and St. Louis play three games on the road.

Detroit, Los Angeles, Montreal and Winnipeg play three games at home.

INJURIES

Ryan Getzlaf is out two months after undergoing surgery. (Click here to see the rest of the injury list.)

Note: A tired team is one that has played the day or night before and is going against a team that did not play the previous day or night. The reverse is true for a rested team.

ANAHEIM

Games this week

vs. Boston, vs. Florida

Rested Team: vs. Florida (Sunday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

Ryan Getzlaf will miss the next two months after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured zygomatic bone in his face. Ryan Kesler is still on track to return to the Ducks lineup around Christmas as he has missed the entire season thus far after having offseason hip surgery. Cam Fowler is out until early December with a knee injury. That’s an awful lot of injuries to key players for the Ducks. Fortunately, John Gibson has passed his concussion protocol and while the Ducks needed to recall Reto Berra from the minors, Gibson should be okay to play this week if not earlier. Berra could remain with the team as Ryan Miller was injured Thursday. Derek Grant saw his five game scoring streak end on Thursday. Corey Perry has only three goals and 10 points in 16 games and looks to be a shadow of his former self, at least as far as fantasy leagues are concerned.

ARIZONA

Games this week

@ Winnipeg, @ Montreal, @ Ottawa

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Coyotes start a four game road trip this week that ends in Toronto on November 20.  Anthony Duclair was a healthy scratch for three straight games and five out of six contests before getting back into the lineup Thursday. He had a great rookie season in 2015-16 with 20 goals and 44 points but struggled last season with only five goals and 15 points in 58 games and he also spent some time in the minors. This season he has three goals and five points in 12 games and hopes to establish himself once again with the Coyotes. Scott Wedgewood is proving to be a better backup in goal than Louis Domingue. Arizona got Antti Raanta back this past week and that should help the team.

BOSTON

Games this week

@ Anaheim, @ Los Angeles, @ San Jose

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Los Angeles (Thursday)

Notes

The Bruins are in California this week and play three games in four nights. Tuukka Rask should get a couple of starts with Anton Khudobin getting one if he is healthy. Brad Marchand has missed two games in a row with an upper body injury and is considered a game-time decision to play on November 10. He should be ready to go in California barring any setback. Anders Bjork is playing on the top line right now with David Pastrnak and Patrice Bergeron. David Krejci started skating on Tuesday for the first time in over two weeks as he has had back problems. Continue to keep an eye on Danton Heinen who has two goals and seven points in 10 games.

BUFFALO

Games this week

@ Pittsburgh, @ Detroit, vs. Carolina

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: vs. Carolina (Saturday)

Notes

Rasmus Ristolainen has missed the last two games with an upper body injury and is now out week-to-week according to the Sabres. That’s a big loss as he is their top offensive defenseman. Jack Eichel wants to shoot the puck more as he has only four goals in 15 games this season. He also has 10 assists so his overall fantasy value has not been diminished greatly. Matt Moulson has been a healthy scratch on five occasions this season and has yet to pick up a point in 10 games. Hope you didn’t draft him. Evander Kane is in a contract year and playing like it as he has nine goals and 15 points in 15 games. The Sabres still don’t have a goal from their blueline.

CALGARY

Games this week

vs. St. Louis, @ Detroit, @ Philadelphia

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

I don’t know what the Flames are going to do about Sam Bennett. He finally got his first point Thursday but it took him 16 games to do so and he needs a change of scenery. Whether that is a trade or a stint in the minors, I’m not sure but he and the Flames can’t continue to go through this. Jaromir Jagr was taken off the injured reserve list but has lost his spot on the top line for now to Micheal Ferland who is playing with Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan. Jagr is playing with Bennett and Mark Jankowski on the third unit. Ferland is second on the Flames in goals with six, trailing only Monahan’s eight. Matthew Tkachuk is showing no signs of a sophomore slump with 11 points in 16 games.

CAROLINA

Games this week

vs. Dallas, @ New York Islanders, @ Buffalo, vs. New York Islanders

Rested Team: @ Buffalo (Saturday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Hurricanes play four games this week with three coming in four nights. Scott Darling will play twice for sure and probably three times with Cam Ward getting the rest of the starts. The Hurricanes play the Islanders twice this week so if there is any animosity, especially in the second game someone will have to come forward as no Hurricane has been involved in a fight this season. Sebastian Aho has yet to find the back of the net in 13 games but does have seven assists. Lee Stempniak is going through a conditioning stint in the minors as he recovers from hip/back issues. Roland McKeown had two assists on Tuesday in his second NHL game and the defenseman was rewarded for it by being sent back to the minors.

 CHICAGO

Games this week

vs. New York Rangers, @ Pittsburgh

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Blackhawks have reunited a line from the past as Jonathan Toews is centering Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp. This has to raise the fantasy value for Sharp who has seen third line duty all season. Gustav Forsling is back in the Blackhawks lineup after missing three games with a head injury.  Corey Crawford was the first star of the week as he was 2-1 with a 0.68 GAA and a .979 save percentage. Artem Anisimov has a four game goal scoring streak end on Sunday. Kane leads the team in points with 14, four ahead of Toews and Ryan Hartman. Hartman was demoted to the fourth line but has since moved back up to the third with Alexander DeBrincat and Nick Schmaltz.

COLORADO

Games this week

vs. Washington, @ Nashville, @ Detroit

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Detroit (Sunday)

Notes

The Avs return from playing the Senators in a back-to-back series in Sweden and the big news is obviously the trade they swung in which they gave up Matt Duchene and got back Samuel Girard, Vladislav Kamenev, Shane Bowers, Andrew Hammond, a first round pick from Ottawa this season, a second round pick from Nashville and a third round selection from Ottawa in 2019. Right now, Girard is the centerpiece for the Avs as he is the offensive defenseman they craved in any deal for Duchene. It will take five-seven years to see how this trade shakes out for Colorado but right now I like it. The Avs play three games in four nights so look for Semyon Varlamov to play twice with Jonathan Bernier getting one start. The trade should also give more playing time eventually to Tyson Jost.

COLUMBUS

Games this week

@ Montreal, vs. New York Rangers

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Blue Jackets only play twice this week. The power play has been spotty so coach John Tortorella moved Seth Jones to the first unit with Zach Werenski as his partner on the blueline and demoted forward Alexander Wennberg. This will increase the value of Jones. Pierre-Luc Dubois is back at center and it looks to have helped his game as he has four points in his last four games. Cam Atkinson returned from a lower body injury on Tuesday after missing four games. Artemi Panarin is having trouble scoring and Monday’s effort was only his second of the season. He still leads the team in points along with Seth Jones at 12, two ahead of Werenski and Oliver Bjorkstrand

DALLAS

Games this week

@ Carolina, @ Florida, @ Tampa Bay, vs. Edmonton

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Florida (Tuesday)

Notes

The Stars play three games in four nights as part of their four game week. Expect to see Ben Bishop play three times with Kari Lehtonen getting one start. Jason Spezza has now gone 15 games without a goal, the longest goalless streak of his career to start a season. John Klingberg has four assists in his last two games to give him 12 this season and 15 points in 15 games. Brad Ritchie is on injured reserve with an upper body injury. The Stars big UFA signing in the offseason was Martin Hanzal but he has disappointed with only one goal in 12 games and a minus-10 rating. Antoine Roussel has only a goal and three points in 15 games after a 29 point season in 60 games last year.
