Waiver Wired: Under the radar

Sunday, December 3, 2017

Tristan Jarry (owned in 50% of Yahoo leagues) should be snatched up immediately if you need goaltending help with Matt Murray sidelined for at least two weeks due to a lower-body injury. Pittsburgh isn’t the only team dealing with a recently injured crease, as Chicago lost Corey Crawford and Edmonton will have to press on without Cam Talbot. Anton Forsberg (owned in 21% of Yahoo leagues) and Laurent Brossoit (owned in 11% of Yahoo leagues) don’t come with the same stamp of approval as Jarry, but Forsberg could be a short-term option if you are desperate. I wouldn’t recommend taking a shot on Brossoit because he has been lit up too many times this season.

Alex DeBrincat (CHI) - LW, RW - Owned in 36% of Yahoo leagues

A week ago, I recommended Artem Anisimov for Chicago’s packed five-game schedule and he has done OK with two power-play goals in four outings, but DeBrincat has been the star of the week for the Blackhawks. He has posted four goals, including his first career hat trick, and two assists over four games heading into Sunday’s matchup against Los Angeles. The 19-year-old has generated 11 goals and 19 points in 26 contests during his rookie campaign. He is tied with Clayton Keller for second in goals among first-year players (just two behind Brock Boeser) and ranks fourth in points.

Joe Thornton (SJS) - C - Owned in 34% of Yahoo leagues

Thornton’s five-game point streak came to an end on Saturday against Tampa Bay. He had two goals and four helpers after he went five straight games without a point. The 38-year-old center isn’t piling up points like he used to and he has had hot and cold stretches this campaign, but he’s on pace for another 50-point effort and could be worthy of a pickup with the Sharks set to play four times this coming week.

Kyle Connor (WPG) - LW - Owned in 20% of Yahoo leagues

Connor should be targeted in more fantasy leagues even though he recently suffered a lower-body injury. Winnipeg has been soaring past the opposition and Connor has been great on the team’s top line alongside Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler. He has compiled 17 points in 21 games this season, which includes five goals and four assists in his past eight matches. Connor has also piled up 50 shots and chipped in three points on the power play this year.

Mikael Backlund (CGY) - C - Owned in 20% of Yahoo leagues

Backlund broke out offensively last year with 22 goals and 31 assists for 53 points in 81 games. He had a bit of a slow start in 2017-18, but he heated up in November with 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in 13 contests. Backlund also added an assist in his first appearance of December. The Flames have four games on tap for this coming week, which will give Backlund plenty of chances to continue his hot play.

Loui Eriksson (VAN) - LW, RW - Owned in 18% of Yahoo leagues

Eriksson has been night and day compared to last season. In 2016-17, he generated just 11 goals and 24 points in 65 appearances, but this year he has five goals and 11 points through 15 outings. He has been clicking with the Sedin twins, who have picked it up on the scoresheet of late.

Josh Anderson (CBJ) - RW - Owned in 17% of Yahoo leagues

Anderson’s five-game point streak was snapped Saturday despite his seven shots on goal against Washington. He had three goals and four helpers during his scoring spree. Anderson has been flying under the radar with Columbus this campaign. He leads the Blue Jackets with 10 goals and ranks second on the team with 17 points in 25 contests. Anderson has also amassed 81 shots, 13 penalty minutes and 44 hits.

Adam Henrique (ANA) - C - Owned in 16% of Yahoo leagues

Henrique has made an immediate impact with the Ducks after he was traded by the New Jersey Devils on Thursday. Anaheim has injuries down the middle to Ryan Getzlaf, Rickard Rakell and Ryan Kesler, so Henrique was placed on the top line alongside Corey Perry. He earned an assist in his debut against Columbus and netted a power-play goal versus Nashville on Saturday night. Once the Ducks get healthier at center, Henrique could retain his fantasy value if he gets shifted to the wing as a top-six forward.

Craig Smith (NSH) - RW - Owned in 16% of Yahoo leagues

Smith has quietly become a fairly consistent producer for Nashville and the arrival of Kyle Turris has certainly helped. He has generated five goals and four assists in 11 games since Turris was acquired from Ottawa. They have meshed well on the second line and Smith is currently tied with Viktor Arvidsson for second on the Predators with nine goals.

Andrew Ladd (NYI) - LW - Owned in 10% of Yahoo leagues

Ladd and Jordan Eberle were initially brought in by the Islanders to play with John Tavares, but they appear to have found a home alongside Mathew Barzal. Ladd has notched four goals and three assists in the last nine games. He has found the back of the net three times in his last four outings and will get opportunities for more with four games scheduled for the coming week.

David Desharnais (NYR) - C - Owned in 0% of Yahoo leagues

Desharnais has been playing between Chris Kreider and Pavel Buchnevich with Mika Zibanejad sidelined due to a concussion and he has stepped up in his new role. He collected three assists versus Florida and then scored a goal against Carolina. Desharnais was initially going to be a healthy scratch for New York’s tilt with the Panthers. He is worthy of at least short-term consideration in deeper leagues.
