NHL GPP Plays: Thursday

Thursday, January 11, 2018

Every Tuesday and Thursday I will be providing my recommended player picks for your daily fantasy hockey lineups. The goal is to help you to the top of the leaderboards in FanDuel and DraftKings tournament play.

__________

It is a rare quiet Thursday night in the National Hockey League this evening with just three games on deck. The Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals and the Columbus Blue Jackets are tonight’s favorites, and none of the six teams in action are playing on consecutive nights.

GOALTENDER

NOTE: Make sure to check the RotoGrinders Starting Goalies Page page prior to game time, to confirm that the goalies listed below are starting.

Braden Holtby, Washington Capitals – Andrei Vasilevskiy may be the safest option in goal tonight on this three-game slate, and Sergei Bobrovsky is certainly capable of a big game (although he has struggled of late), but I am rolling with Braden Holtby in tournaments. Of all the six teams in action tonight, the Carolina Hurricanes take the most shots on goal per game (34.3), however they struggle to put the biscuit in the basket (20th overall in the National Hockey League in goals per game so far this season), putting Holtby in a prime spot. A win and plenty of saves is the key in net to GPP success, and I think we get both from the Capitals netminder this evening at the Capital One Arena.

FORWARDS

Columbus Blue Jackets Number One Line  - With most daily fantasy players focusing on the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Washington Capitals, the Columbus Blue Jackets’ underrated top line is sure to fly under the radar tonight in large field tournaments. This Blue Jackets trio has shown great chemistry when playing together, and they have already posted some monster games this season. The Buffalo Sabres are not a good hockey team (10-24-9), and they have been a defensive disaster of late, allowing the most goals against per game in the National Hockey League this month (4.80). The Sabres lack defensive consistency and strong goaltending, and until these issues are fixed, we can continue to roster their opposition on a nightly basis. The Blue Jackets’ number one line has multi-goal potential tonight in this favorable matchup and they are a moderately priced line to stack.

Calgary Flames Top Line - The Calgary Flames may be a one line team, but they are one hell of a line, and they are a very difficult line to shut down. The Flames’ top line sees the opposing team’s best defensive line when on the road, yet they have still produced consistently, registering some big games along the way. The matchup tonight at the Amalie Arena is far from easy, but this trio has surprised us before, and I would not be shocked to see them roll out yet another multi-goal game in a tough environment. If you are looking to go contrarian tonight on this three-game slate, the Flames’ number one line has big game potential, and they will not be highly owned in tournament play.

DEFENSE

Noah Hanifin, Carolina Hurricanes – Of the three big favorites tonight, the Washington Capitals are the weakest defensively, sitting 21st in CA/60, 31st in HDCA/60 and 28th in SCA/60. Making matters worse, Washington is also one of the National Hockey League’s most penalized teams, and their penalty kill has been less than stellar, ranking 22nd overall.  It is hard to get excited about a Carolina Hurricanes offense that struggles to score (and has multiple lines that can score), so I will be focusing on value defenseman Noah Hanifin. Because of his multi-point potential, and his inexpensive price tag, I will have plenty of shares of the Hurricanes’ talented young blue liner tonight when constructing my GPP lineups.
