Flames Push Win Streak to Six

Saturday, January 13, 2018

If the Flames were fatigued on Friday, it wasn’t enough to slow them down.  Playing in their third road game in the span of four games, the Flames managed to earn a 4-2 victory over Florida to extend their winning streak to six games.

It’s worth noting that Florida did outshoot Calgary 43-29 with Flames backup goaltender David Rittich being the difference.  He’s been used sparingly, but has been a reliable backup when called upon so far.

The Flames won on the strength of more than just their goaltending though.  They haven’t been hurting for goals lately and Sean Monahan has been one of the big reasons for that.  He had a goal and an assist on Friday and is on a six-game point streak that’s included four multi-point contests.

Monahan is up to 21 goals and 42 points in 44 games, making him a great compliment to Johnny Gaudreau, who has 52 points this season.  The Flames were fortunate to sign both of them to reasonable contracts as their combined cap hit is $13.125 million through 2021-22.  In other words, Calgary is getting Monahan and Gaudreau combined for just a little more than the Oilers will be paying Connor McDavid in 2018-19.  While McDavid is an amazing player, getting two star forwards for roughly the same price is a pretty good deal.

Of course, the Flames still have a lot to prove, but they’ve put themselves in a good position.
